My laptop does not connect to a 5 GHz wireless signal.  Which Wi-Fi card do I need for this upgrade?

Hi:

What model wifi card does your notebook currently have installed?

HP Recommended

802.11b/g/n Wifi

I will have to double check it once I get back home.

OK, when you get back home and if you see a Realtek RTL8723DE wifi adapter listed under the Network Adapters device manager category, then you can replace it with this card...

Realtek RTL8821CE 802.11 ac 1x1 WiFi + Bluetooth 4.2 Combo Adapter (MU-MIMO supported) HP part # L17365-005.

You can find this model on eBay, or the HP parts store.

The card has the same throughput as the RTL8723DE card on the 2.4 GHz wifi band, but on the 5.0 GHz wifi band with an AC router, it has a maximum throughput of 433 MBPS.

This is the link to the closest service manual I could find for your model, where you can find the wifi card removal and replacement procedure...hopefully your notebook will use the same disassembly procedure.
