HP Pavilion Gaming - 15-dk0017nk

I am using an HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop – 15-dk0017nk with a Realtek RTL8822BE 802.11ac PCIe Wi-Fi adapter. After upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11, I began experiencing severe Wi-Fi connectivity problems across all Wi-Fi networks.

Issue Details:

  • The laptop frequently fails to connect to Wi-Fi networks.

  • When a connection attempt fails, the Wi-Fi network completely disappears from the list of available networks, even though it is still visible and working on other devices.

  • If I manage to connect, the connection is lost after restarting or shutting down the laptop.

  • After reboot, the laptop does not reconnect automatically and sometimes the Wi-Fi network does not show up again until I toggle Wi-Fi on/off or restart the system.

  • None of these issues occurred on Windows 10.

Troubleshooting Already Attempted:

  • Installed the latest Windows 11 updates.

  • Updated the Realtek RTL8822BE Wi-Fi driver .

  • Reset all network settings and re-added Wi-Fi networks.

  • Tried different routers, access points, and hotspots.

  • Rebooted routers and verified that Wi-Fi works normally on other devices.

  • Ran Windows Network Troubleshooter multiple times.

Despite these steps, the issue persists.

Take a look at this post. Paul_Tikkanen found a driver for RTL 8821ce in the business laptops for a user where none exited for his laptop after upgrading to Win 11 25h2. That driver 2024.10.230.600 also supports the RTL 8822BE adapter. That poster told me it solved his problem.

Hey Paul,
I'll try tonight, but just wanted to let you know that my current version is 2024.10.230.601.
Thanks

I tried it, but it didn’t work. The Wi-Fi SSID doesn’t appear unless I disable and re-enable Wi-Fi, and when it finally shows up and I try to connect, it says ‘Cannot connect to network’

I'm not sure why your network ssid is not showing up in the list. A short review of the wifi connection process is:

  1. Network discovery:  The adapter scans for wifi network beacon signals and evaluates signal strength, security settings, etc. The scanning is dependent on wlan-autoconfig running. Note that there are beacon signals for each wifi band (2.4 & 5GHz).
  2. Authentication:  Handshake communication between the adapter and AP (router) take place. The AP validates the adapter capabilities, wifi standards, password, etc., accepting or rejecting the connection.
  3. Association:  The adapter requests to join the network and the AP responds with a unique ID allowing it to join the network.

A)  I would first make sure that wlan-autoconfig is running and that it's Start mode is set to Automatic.

In the Search bar:  services

Then find WLAN-AutoConfig > double click on it and check the settings.

B)  The usual advice for not being able to connect is to Forget the network (which removes the profile) and then try reconnecting with the password. If that is not working I wonder if the wifi Security protocols got changed in the upgrade.

In the Search bar: control panel

Then Network & internet > Network and sharing Center > Change adapter settings

Double click wifi2 > Wireless Properties > Security tab > Security type

I would try to match the setting (WPA2-Personal, WPA3-Personal, etc) to whatever the router security settings are for each wifi band.

C) The windows Event Viewer might give some clue as to what is going on.

Open the Event Viewer and expand > Applications and Service logs > Microsoft > Windows > WLAN-Autoconfig > click Operational

In the top panel are the Event IDs. If you click one there is a short description in the panel below. A normal connection would show these Even IDs:

8000 AcmConnection          connection started

11000 MsmAssociation      association started

11001 MsmAssociation      association succeeded

11001 MsmSecurity              wireless security started

11005 MsmSecurity              wireless security succeeded

8001    AcmConnection        connection was successful

11004 MsmSecurity              wireless security stopped

If something failed it could be logged here.

When I start the PC, it connects to Wi-Fi, but when I try to switch to another network, the connection fails.

  1. WLAN-AutoConfig is activated
  2. Preferred Band is 5GHz i switch it to 2.4GHz for more compatibility
  3. Security type is WPA2-Personal
  4. LAN-Autoconfig event log:

The WLAN AutoConfig service failed to connect to a wireless network.

From the first entry you can see that the adapter was able to successfully scan for the wifi signal, send an authentication request to the AP and receive a response from the AP because it would not have gotten to the Association phase. It fails during Association due to RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) of 255. An RSSI of 255 simply means that the adapter cannot read the signal due to any number of things like weak signal, loss of signal due to interference. RSSI correlates to measured strength in dBm (- 50 dBm). The other entries look like it could not see the signal at all.

I would have suggested you go to a location like a library to see if the problem exists in a different environment but you said you have tried other routers.  I'm sorry but I don't have any other ideas to offer.

Thank you very much, I really appreciate your help.

Just one other question can i change the wifi adapter from Realtek RTL8822BE 802.11ac PCIe Wi-Fi adapter to Intel Wi-Fi 6 adapter ? If it's possible, which one does my PC support?

HP Recommended

I don't know the answer to that. Paul_Tikkanen is the person who might be able answer that question. You might need to submit another post with that specific question. You can try to find the Maintenance & Service Manual for your laptop via  Product Support under the Support Resources tab. But I found that my hp 14-dk0024wm laptop Maintenance & Service manual is gone. I used it several months ago but it is no longer in the User manual section; hp removed it, maybe they no longer support my laptop (purchased in Dec. 2019).

By the way, if you still have the Power Management tab for the wifi adapter in windows 11 (check Device manager

and go into properties). Turn off the "save power by turning off the adapter" (or whatever it is). The tab is there in windows 10, but it is not there in windows 11; at least it should not be there in win11, but it is worth it to check anyway.
