Wi-Fi network adapter not present in device manager

Yesterday, while I was attending a webminar I lost my wi-fi internet connection. The wi-fi network adapter was not more present in the device manager and the wi-fi led is stuck orange.

I tried to reinstall Windows 10 from scratch but with no luck.

Now, in device manager I have a problem with the following devices:

1) PCI device

I also tried with HP Support Assistant, but it doesn't find any problem and no updates available for my notebook.

Hi:

Neither of those devices are the wifi adapter.

Sounds to me like it either died on you, or needs to be removed and re-seated.

Consult the maintenance and service guide for how to remove and reseat the wifi adapter.

You can leave the antenna cables connected to the wifi adapter to facilitate easy replacement.

What is the full model number or product number of your notebook?

Looking at the hardware ID's you posted for the other devices, you need this driver for the PCI Simple Communication Controller:

For the SD card reader (PCI Device), download, unzip and run the setup application from the first driver listed at the link below.

Regarding  the PCI Simple Communication Controller and the SD card reader (PCI Device) I followed your instructions and now all is perfectly working.

Regarding the wifi adapter I was able to remove and reseat it, but with no luck: it's still not  listed in the Network adapters list of the Device Manager. Probably it has died.

Anyway, the product number of my notebook is D6V91EA#ABZ.

Can you open up the notebook again for me and let me know what model wifi adapter it is, or the HP part number for the adapter on the label?

Some model wifi adapters such as the Ralink models do not work right on W10.  Usually they completely disappear from sight in the device manager on the latest releases of W10.

If you want to replace the internal card, get this one, which is also dual band, so it would be an improvement.

Hi Paul,

the model of my wifi adapter is RALINK RT5390.

My PC was running Windows 10 for at least one year without a problem, but yesterday the adapter completely disappeared.

Is there a way to check if it's dead or is simply a a problem related to the OS.

In the latter case, do you know a solution/workaround to solve the problem?

Yes that model wifi card is one of those that notoriously disappears from the device manager in W10.

No way to test to see if it is the card or the OS, other than to reinstall W8.1.

If it shows up as a Controllore di rete in the device manager, after installing W8.1 then it was W10, and not the card.

If it doesn't, then the card is morto.

If you want, here is how to clean install W8.1 by using the W8 product key in your notebook's BIOS.

Install W8.1 by creating the Microsoft installation media, using another Windows PC, if yours is not working...You want W8.1 64 bit.

If you are asked to enter a product key during the installation process, use this generic key.

This is the generic key for W8.1 'Standard.'

When you get to the screen that asks 'Where do you want to install Windows,' delete every partition on the hard drive, leaving just one partition of unallocated space. Click Next, and W8.1 should begin to install.

If you had to enter the generic key, manually change the generic product key to the W8 key in your PC's BIOS in the PC settings menu.

After you get W8.1 installed, and you had to manually enter the W8.1 generic product key, you will need to run the free utility I zipped up and attached below, that will show you show the W8 product key in your PC's BIOS.

I have also zipped up and attached below, the Microsoft tool which hopefully will transfer the ISO file to a DVD or USB flash drive so it is bootable, or you can use a different free utility such as Rufus.

Then you can install the available drivers and software from your PC's support page.

I tried installing Windows 8.1.

Unfortunately the wifi adapter is not shown as a Networkd adapter in the Device Manager.

It seems my adapter is dead.

Maybe the best solution is to buy a USB WiFi adapter.
