Does anybody know why this is happening all of a sudden?

Now for some reason when I turn my laptop on, it's never connected to the internet. I either have to wait 20 minutes or so, or I have to restart it for it to connect, or the third option, manually turn it on. I didn't change the settings and I've always had it set to connect automatically when turned on. So what is the deal and how do I make it stop? My warranty expired in December so I can't get through to anyone..

Hi @RadiantKoala,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

This issue usually happens due to a combination of factors like driver conflicts, power management settings, or network adapter initialization delays. Here’s how you can fix it:

1. Check Wi-Fi Auto-Connect Settings

  • Go to Settings → Network & Internet → Wi-Fi → Manage known networks.
  • Select your network → Properties → Ensure Connect automatically when in range is enabled.

2. Update Network Drivers

  • Press Windows + X → Device Manager → Network adapters.
  • Right-click your Wi-Fi adapter → Update driverSearch automatically.
  • If that doesn’t help, download the latest driver from Official HP® Support for your laptop model.

3. Disable Power Saving for Wi-Fi

  • In Device Manager → Network adapters → Wi-Fi adapter → Properties → Power Management tab.
  • Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

4. Reset Network Settings

  • Go to Settings → Network & Internet → Advanced network settings → Network reset.
  • Restart your laptop after the reset.

5. Fast Startup & Sleep Issues

  • Sometimes Fast Startup delays network initialization.
  • Disable it: Control Panel → Power Options → Choose what the power buttons do → Change settings → Uncheck Turn on fast startup.

6. Run HP Network Diagnostics

  • Open HP Support Assistant → Troubleshooting → Network Check.
  • It can detect adapter or configuration issues.

7. Check Router Settings

  • Ensure your router isn’t using MAC filtering or unusual DHCP settings.
  • Restart the router and the laptop together.

If the issue persists, it could be:

  • A failing Wi-Fi card (common after 2–3 years).
  • Windows corruption (network stack issues).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
