Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
(Ah, the Wi-Fi disappearing act—working fine for a few minutes, then gone! If your HP laptop’s Wi-Fi is pulling this trick, don’t worry, you’re not alone. Let’s work some troubleshooting magic to get it back online! 😉)
Check for Wireless Interference
Sometimes, Wi-Fi disconnects are caused by interference from other devices or networks. Try the following:
- Change the Wi-Fi Channel: If your router is on an over-crowded channel, try changing the Wi-Fi channel on your router settings. For 2.4 GHz networks, try channels 1, 6, or 11.
- Try a Different Frequency Band: If your router supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, try connecting to the 5 GHz network. The 2.4 GHz band is often more crowded and can cause connectivity issues.
Update BIOS & Chipset Drivers
Sometimes, the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) and chipset drivers play a crucial role in Wi-Fi stability. Since you’ve updated the normal drivers, ensure that:
- BIOS Update: Visit the HP website and check if there’s a BIOS update available for your model.
- Chipset Drivers: These drivers are essential for proper communication between the motherboard and peripherals like your Wi-Fi card. Go to the HP support page and download the latest chipset drivers.
Perform Network Reset
If the problem lies deeper within your networking settings, a reset could help clear any corrupt configurations:
- Windows Network Reset:
- Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Status.
- Scroll down and click on Network reset.
- Click Reset now and restart your laptop. This will reinstall network adapters and set everything back to default settings.
Modify Power Settings for Wi-Fi Adapter
You've mentioned modifying power settings, but let's ensure the Wi-Fi adapter is always on:
- Open Device Manager (right-click on Start > Device Manager).
- Expand Network adapters, right-click your Wi-Fi adapter, and select Properties.
- Under the Power Management tab, uncheck the box that says “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”
Disable Bluetooth (Conflicting with Wi-Fi)
Some users experience Wi-Fi drops due to Bluetooth interference. If you’re not actively using Bluetooth, try turning it off:
- Go to Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, and disable Bluetooth drivers temporarily to see if this helps.
Change the Wireless Mode in Device Manager
Sometimes setting the Wi-Fi card to a different mode can stabilize the connection:
- In Device Manager, under Network adapters, right-click your Wi-Fi card and select Properties.
- Go to the Advanced tab.
- Look for an option called Wireless Mode or similar. Set it to a different mode, such as 802.11n or 802.11ac, depending on what your router supports.
Check for Malware/Antivirus Interference
- Malware or overly aggressive antivirus software can interfere with your network connectivity. Run a full system scan using Windows Defender or a third-party tool to rule this out. Temporarily disabling your antivirus might also help you check if it’s causing the issue.
Try an External Wi-Fi Adapter
- If the problem persists, and you're able to test with an external USB Wi-Fi dongle, it can help confirm if your built-in Wi-Fi adapter is faulty. If the external adapter works fine, the issue is likely with the internal Wi-Fi card, which might require a replacement.
Use HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (Windows-based)
-
Download and Install the Tool (if not already installed):
- Go to the HP Support website and search for HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
- Download and install the tool, if it's not already on your system.
-
Launch the Tool
-
Run the Network Test:
- Once the tool opens, you’ll see several test options. Click on "Component Tests".
- From the list, select "Network" or "Wireless", depending on the version.
- Click "Run the test" to check the status of your Wi-Fi adapter and its connection capabilities.
-
Review the Results:
- If the test detects an issue with the network adapter, it will show an error code or message.
- If no issues are found, it confirms that the hardware is functioning correctly, and the problem is likely software or configuration related.
Run UEFI Diagnostics (Hardware Test)
- Shut down your laptop completely.
- Turn it back on and immediately press the ESC key repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
- From the Startup Menu, press F2 to enter the UEFI diagnostics.
- In the diagnostics menu, select "Component Test" and choose Network Adapter (or Wireless Test).
- Let the test run to see if any errors or issues are detected with your Wi-Fi card or related hardware.
- If the test finds no issues, it’s likely a software or driver problem. If it detects a fault, you may need to replace or repair the Wi-Fi adapter.
Reinstall Windows (Last Resort)
If all else fails, consider reinstalling Windows as a last resort. This can clear any deep configuration issues or system corruption:
- Make sure to back up your data before proceeding.
- You can use Reset this PC from Settings > Update & Security > Recovery to reinstall Windows without affecting your files.
I hope these steps help resolve the issue
