HP Chromebook x360 14a-ca0000 (446M9AV)
Chrome OS

HI, I wonder if anyone can help,  or point me in a direction if this has been covered elsewhere. My Chrome laptop Wifi Keeps dropping out randomly. nothing wrong with the wifi all other devices work fine. it's almost like it sleeps after a few mins even seconds of inactivity. sometimes it happens when streaming. super annoying. I open the network connection page and it reconnects automatically. we've done a factory reset which didn't solve the problem  Every now and then I put the laptop in the bin for a bit this hasn't got it working either... It's always had this problem.  I've just put off doing anything about it till now.

Thank you in advance

Pa

Hi @pa121212,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're experiencing Wi-Fi connectivity issues with your HP Chromebook x360 14a, you can try a series of troubleshooting steps to resolve the problem. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you with this issue.

  • Check Wi-Fi Signal Strength: Ensure that you are within the range of your Wi-Fi router and that the signal strength is strong. Weak signals can result in dropped connections.
  • Restart Your Chromebook: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary issues. Reboot your Chromebook to see if the Wi-Fi connection stabilizes.
  • Check Other Devices: Verify if other devices connected to the same Wi-Fi network are experiencing similar issues. If they are, the problem might be with your Wi-Fi router or internet service provider (ISP).
  • Router Restart: Restart your Wi-Fi router by unplugging it for about 10 seconds and then plugging it back in. This can help clear any temporary glitches in the router.
  • Forget and Reconnect to Wi-Fi: Go to your Chromebook's Wi-Fi settings, forget the network you're having trouble with, and then reconnect to it by entering the Wi-Fi password.
  • Update Chrome OS: Make sure your Chromebook is running the latest version of Chrome OS. Updates often include bug fixes and improvements, including those related to Wi-Fi connectivity.
  • Clear Cache and Cookies: Clearing your browser's cache and cookies can sometimes resolve network-related issues. Go to Chrome Settings > Privacy and Security > Clear browsing data, and select "Cached images and files" and "Cookies and other site data." Then, click "Clear data."
  • Check for Interference: Ensure there are no physical obstructions or electronic devices (e.g., cordless phones, microwave ovens) that could interfere with your Wi-Fi signal.
  • Power Management Settings: Adjust power management settings to prevent your Chromebook from turning off the Wi-Fi adapter to save power. Go to Chrome Settings > Wi-Fi > Network connection preferences > Manage network connections, and disable the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" option.
  • Factory Reset: As a last resort, you can perform a factory reset on your Chromebook. This will erase all data on the device, so be sure to back up your important files before doing this. To perform a factory reset, go to Chrome Settings > Advanced > Reset settings > Powerwash.

Remember that Wi-Fi issues can be caused by various factors, and the steps above should help you diagnose and resolve the problem. Start with the basic troubleshooting steps and work your way through them until you find a solution that works for you.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks Alden4

This has been a very comprehensive list of actions to take and I have done them all still no luck!  The only thing in your list I couldn't find was the Power management settings. In fact I couldn't find auto sleep mode in any of the settings options, I went through them all, and searched key words...

Is it possible it could be a hardware issue? As it's always been like this. if I'm honest and grew up on PCs which seem a hell of a lot easier to operate than this Chromebook.

Thanks again for your help

Patrick
