I do have a wifi adapter capable of 5ghz but it always connects to 2.4ghz. The "preferred band" in advanced options is set to "5g first." Is there a solution for this?

@dtully,

Welcome to our HP Community Forum!

Let's check if your Wi-Fi adapter is indeed capable to connect to 5GHz.  You can check it by following the steps in this link: https://www.drivereasy.com/knowledge/computer-not-see-5ghz-wifi-sees-2-4ghz-windows/.

Also, in Device Manager right-click on your Wi-Fi device and choose Properties. Go to Power Management and make sure that both the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" and: "Allow this device to wake the computer" are unchecked.  Also select IEEE 802.11a/n/ac in Wireless Mode.

In addition, it may help to reset your Wi-Fi/Network using CMD -sort of kickstarting your Wi-Fi system: Resetting Network Devices and Network Stack (intel.com).

Hope this was helpful.

Kind Regards,

Thanks for the response @NonSequitur777

I have checked the wifi adapter and it is capable of connecting to 5Ghz.

In terms of your solutions, I have tried them all and, unfortunately, none of them have worked. I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver, as well as rolling back the driver too.

Although it is not an immediate concern staying at 2.4Ghz, I may want to upgrade my internet speed to 500mbps or even higher in the near future, but my pc won't be able to support that as things stand.

If you or anyone else has any other ideas, let me know.
