I am trying to connect my computer to my friend’s internet. Every time I click her network it takes me to a page that says “paused”, it doesn’t even let me put in the password. I have tried different things and none of it works. Was wondering if anybody knows something that might help.

@Valeesc, Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're stoked to have you on board!

(Sounds like you're having a classic "internet connection drama" moment! First, let’s see if we can get your device back into the Wi-Fi world without all the mysterious "paused" messages 😅)

To help us get started on resolving your issue, could you please share your HP unit's serial number or product number with us via private message?

Need help finding your product number? We've got you covered! Check out this handy guide:  Click here.

To access your private messages, simply click the private message icon on the upper right corner of your HP Support Community profile, next to your profile name.

Meanwhile, here’s a general troubleshooting checklist that can help:

  • Check physical connections: Ensure that all cables connecting your modem/router to your laptop are securely plugged in. If you're using Wi-Fi, make sure the wireless adapter is turned on.
  • Restart your devices: Reboot your laptop, modem, and router. Sometimes, a simple restart can fix connectivity issues.
  • Troubleshoot network adapter: Open the "Device Manager" on your laptop (you can search for it in the Windows search bar) and expand the "Network adapters" section. If you see any yellow exclamation marks or red crosses, there might be an issue with the network adapter. Right-click on the problematic adapter and select "Update driver" to install the latest driver software.

Check the adapter power settings.
1. Press "Windows + X" and select "Device Manager";
2. Expand "Network adapters";
3. Right-click on the adapter and select "Properties";
4. Go to the "Power Management" tab
5. Uncheck the option "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power";
6. Click Ok.
See if the issue is resolved.

If it persists,

Reset the network settings:
1. Press "Windows + I" and select "Network & Internet > Advanced network settings";
2. Select "Network Reset";
3. Select "Reset Now", and at the confirmation screen, select "Yes";
Note: The PC will need to be restarted.
4. Now open Start and type cmd;
5. Right-click on "Command Prompt" in the result list and select "Run as administrator";
6. At the Command Prompt, type the following commands one at a time and press Enter:

  • netsh int ip reset
  • netsh winsock reset
  • ipconfig /release
  • ipconfig /renew
  • ipconfig /flushdns

7. Restart your PC and see if the issue is resolved.

If it persists, reinstall the network driver. Download the latest network driver from HP Support / HP Support Assistant.
(If you cannot find it, let me know the exact model of your HP laptop)

Uninstall the current driver:
1. Press "Windows + X" and select "Device Manager".
2. Expand "Network adapters".
3. Right-click on the adapter and select "Uninstall device".
4. On the confirmation screen, check "Attempt to remove the driver for this device" and click "Ok".
5. Restart the PC.
