My Bluetooth devices suddenly disconnected from my computer. After trying every troubleshooting method I could find, I visited the HP Support website and noticed that the MediaTek Bluetooth driver is no longer available and appears to have been discontinued.

At the moment, even after downloading the driver you recommended, the installation fails immediately with an error message, and I cannot complete the installation or use Bluetooth at all.

If there has been a driver update, shouldn't Windows or HP automatically provide and install the appropriate Bluetooth driver? Instead, my Bluetooth functionality has completely stopped working.

This issue is extremely urgent and needs to be resolved as soon as possible. You need to provide us with a working Bluetooth driver. Please first check the drivers currently available on your support website. None of the available drivers work, and it seems that the previously working one has been removed after an update.

I would appreciate an urgent response and a working solution as soon as possible.

Hi @thegirlwhoh,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I understand how frustrating it is when Bluetooth suddenly stops working, especially after it was functioning normally. I’ll do my best to help.

Problem:

Your Bluetooth devices disconnected unexpectedly, and attempts to reinstall the MediaTek Bluetooth driver fail immediately with an error. You also noticed that the previously available MediaTek Bluetooth driver is no longer listed on the Official HP® Support and are concerned that a recent update may have removed the working driver.

Likely Cause:

This behavior is typically caused by one of the following:

  • A corrupted or incomplete Bluetooth driver installation.

  • A Windows Update that replaced or removed the existing driver.

  • A mismatch between the installed driver package and the Bluetooth hardware.

  • Corrupted driver files remaining in the Windows driver store, preventing a new installation.

Regarding your question about automatic driver updates: while Windows Update and HP Support Assistant | HP® Support can automatically deliver compatible drivers, they do not always reinstall a driver if the current installation becomes corrupted or if the hardware is no longer being detected correctly. In those cases, a manual clean installation is often required.

Solution: Perform a Clean Bluetooth Driver Installation

A clean installation removes any corrupted driver files before installing a fresh copy of the Bluetooth driver.

Completely remove the existing Bluetooth driver.

  • Open Device Manager.

  • Expand Bluetooth.

  • Right-click each MediaTek Bluetooth device and select Uninstall device.

  • If prompted, select Delete the driver software for this device.

  • Restart the computer.

Install a compatible MediaTek Bluetooth driver.

  • Download a stable HP MediaTek Bluetooth SoftPaq (such as sp170040.exe or sp170057.exe) from the HP FTP directory.

  • Run the installer.

If the installer fails immediately, install the driver manually.

  • Extract the SoftPaq using 7-Zip (or another extraction utility), or obtain the driver package from the Microsoft Update Catalog if applicable.

  • Open Device Manager.

  • Right-click the Bluetooth adapter and select Update driver.

  • Choose Browse my computer for drivers.

  • Browse to the extracted driver folder and complete the installation.

Expected Outcome

After the correct MediaTek Bluetooth driver is installed successfully, the Bluetooth adapter should reappear in Device Manager without errors, Bluetooth functionality should be restored, and your Bluetooth devices should pair and connect normally.

Next Steps

If the installation continues to fail after completing the steps above, please let us know:

  • The exact HP product model or Product Number.

  • The Windows version and build (Windows 10 or Windows 11).

  • The exact error message or error code displayed during installation.

  • Whether the Bluetooth adapter appears in Device Manager, appears with a yellow warning icon, or is missing entirely.

This information will help determine whether the issue is driver-related, Windows-related, or caused by the Bluetooth hardware no longer being detected.

I hope this helps restore your Bluetooth functionality.

Take care and have a good day.
