HP Chromebook - 11a-nb0500sa

I have a brand new chrome book and cannot set myself up as a user because the machine will not connect to the network and only allow me to go in as a guest. Once I log in as guest the network does actually work. I have tried this on a number of different network and have the same problem. Error message reads "can't connect chrome device to the network"

Hi @stimpyt,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're having trouble connecting your brand-new HP Chromebook to a network, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:

Check Wi-Fi Settings:

  • Make sure the Wi-Fi is turned on. You can usually find this in the taskbar or settings.
  • Ensure you're attempting to connect to the correct network.
  • Check if the network requires a password. If it does, ensure you're entering the correct password.

Restart Your Chromebook:

  • Sometimes a simple restart can resolve connectivity issues. Try restarting your Chromebook and then attempt to connect to the network again.

Check Airplane Mode:

  • Make sure Airplane Mode is turned off. Airplane Mode disables all wireless connections, including Wi-Fi.

Move Closer to the Router:

  • Sometimes, weak signals can cause connection problems. Move closer to the router and see if the Chromebook can connect.

Forget and Reconnect:

  • If you've previously connected to the network but are having issues now, try "forgetting" the network and then reconnecting. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi > click on the network name > Forget.

Try Another Network:

  • If possible, try connecting to a different Wi-Fi network to see if the issue is specific to the network you're trying to connect to.

Check Router Settings:

  • Sometimes router settings can affect device connectivity. Ensure your router is properly configured, and you might consider restarting it.

Update Chrome OS:

  • Check for any available software updates for your Chromebook. Outdated software can sometimes cause connectivity issues.

Reset Network Settings:

  • If the issue persists, you can try resetting your network settings. Go to Settings > Advanced > Reset settings > Reset Wi-Fi, mobile, & Bluetooth.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
