Printer was working but now it's stopped and I have no solution at all, period. No reason for it to stop working, I can get it working on Linux but not Windows. i have since changed broadband provider but that has nothing to do with the issue because I had the same problem with the old broadband provider. Trying to set up on Windows gets me so far and then i get error 128 and a continual loop. Printer is impossible to set up.

Hi @Alastairfk13,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Error code 128 on an HP printer typically indicates a communication error between the printer and the computer. Since you mentioned that the printer works on Linux but not on Windows, and you've also changed broadband providers, it seems like the issue might be related to the Windows environment or network configuration rather than the printer itself.
Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.
- Restart Devices: Sometimes, a simple restart can fix communication issues. Restart your computer, printer, and router to ensure they are all properly refreshed.
- Check Network Connection: Ensure that both your computer and the printer are connected to the same network. You can check the network settings on your printer's control panel to verify the connection.
- Update Printer Drivers: Make sure you have the latest printer drivers installed on your Windows computer. You can download the latest drivers from the HP website specific to your printer model.
- Disable Firewall/Antivirus: Temporary disable any firewall or antivirus software on your computer and try setting up the printer again. Sometimes, these security programs can block printer communication.
- Reset Printer Network Settings: You can try resetting the network settings on your printer to default and then reconfigure the wireless connection. Refer to your printer's manual for instructions on how to reset the network settings.
- Check Router Settings: Make sure your router settings are compatible with your printer's requirements. Some routers have specific settings that can affect printer communication, such as firewall settings or MAC address filtering.
- Use HP Print and Scan Doctor: HP provides a diagnostic tool called HP Print and Scan Doctor, which can help identify and fix common printing problems. Download and run this tool to see if it can detect and resolve the issue.
By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot and resolve the error code 128 on your HP printer.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
