Welcome to the HP Community --

Update Example plate and description

Many computers include a Sim card slot -

What might be missing is the WWAN module that is also required to use that Sim card to connect to your Mobile carrier.

What?

Not all computers include the required WWAN Mobile Broadband module.

The WWAN option must be purchased with the computer or be part of the purchase bundle.

If the SIM card is recognized when inserted into the correct Port - that is, the SIM card is appropriate for the Port and is correct for the Service Provider in the region - AND if the card is a recent enough physical version of that SIM card hardware,  (then) Settings > Network & internet will display the known information about the installed card.

What can go wrong?

So many things... including (and not limited to)...

  • Incorrect insertion - backwards, upside down, bent, not making contact
  • Dead SIM card or one that has been disabled
  • The SIM card does not match the region, the intended service provider
  • WWAN module or the SIM card are not powered / enabled / activated
  • Missing WWAN driver
  • Missing Windows Updates
  • Outdated BIOS

If the SIM card is tied to an active Cellular Service Account for the service, that information will be displayed in Settings > Network & internet

The Device Manager displays detected hardware

WWAN / Mobile Broadband adapter / module

Many laptops include the sim card slot -- not all computers include the necessary WWAN module inside the computer that provides the SIM card a way to talk to the Mobile Broadband network provider.

Where supported in the hardware, the Mobile Broadband adapter module is an option -- add the feature during a custom build purchase order.  The WWAN option might come as part of a bundled purchase.

The SIM card, when tied to a provider's mobile network account, allows you to use that carrier's network.
