I was working on a HP Pavillion DV 9000 that my son was given, I plugged in a Eithernet cable to see if the internet would work.
NO Local Services were availbe so I confifured the 1394 Connection and after several problems I installed a IP Configration Program. The Windows System connected and installed the 2 remaining Windows XP Service Pack Hot Fixes. After those Hot Fixes were inistalled the Dell Wireless adapter disapperared from the device mangager. After researching I found several posts about Win XP Service Pack problems related to missing Device Mangaer Adapters and Network Configurations missing . This all was related to Windows Registry entries that were faulting after Win XP Service Pack 3 competed. I have limited experience in the Windows Registry System. I have looked at the Microsoft Fixes that are almost zero. I do not want to add more probles by attempting to correct the bad registry entries. Any help would be a great benefit. I am thinking about cleaning the disk drive for a clean install of Windows 8or 8.1.
