Hi Bhaskar_667,

Welcome to the HP Community! I am a new volunteer here participating in the HP Solve-a-thon, and I would be glad to help you get your Bluetooth working again, especially since it is so important for your job.

The screenshots you provided indicate you are operating an HP ProBook 4540s on Windows 10 Pro version 22H2. Your first screenshot shows the system failing to connect and prompting you to turn on Bluetooth. When the toggle completely disappears like this, it usually means the hardware switch is off, the driver has crashed, or there is a static buildup on the motherboard.

Because the ProBook 4540s is a highly durable older model, this issue is often tied to a physical button or a hidden Windows driver conflict. Let's walk through the exact steps to restore it, incorporating solutions that have successfully worked for other users across the web.

1. Perform a Hard Reset (Power Drain)

Many users on Reddit's tech support forums have reported that when the Bluetooth option suddenly vanishes from Windows 10, a simple static discharge fixes it.

  • Shut down your PC.

  • Unplug the power cable.

  • Press the power button for 30 secs and release.

  • Plug everything back and turn your pc on. You'll see your bluetooth again.

2. Check the Physical Wireless Button

The HP ProBook 4540s has a dedicated hardware button for wireless radios located right above the keyboard.

  • Look at the wireless button indicator light.

  • If it is glowing amber or orange, your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are physically disabled.

  • Press the button so it glows white or blue to re-enable the Bluetooth radio.

3. Unhide and Reinstall the Driver

According to a solved thread on the HP Support Community regarding the ProBook 4540s and Windows 10, the Bluetooth driver can sometimes get stuck.

  • Go to the device manager.

  • Click to expand the Bluetooth device manager category.

  • Look for the Qualcomm Atheros AR3012 Bluetooth adapter.

  • Right click on the Qualcomm Atheros AR3012 Bluetooth adapter, select uninstall, and check the uninstall driver box.

  • Restart the PC. It should show up as a generic Bluetooth adapter.

4. Restart the Bluetooth Support Service

If the hardware is fine, the background service that runs Bluetooth in Windows 10 might have crashed.

  • Press Windows Key + R on your keyboard to open the Run dialog box.

  • Type services.msc and press Enter.

  • Scroll down until you find Bluetooth Support Service.

  • Right-click it and select Restart (or Start if it is stopped).

  • Right-click it again, select Properties, and ensure the Startup type is set to Automatic. Click Apply and OK.

Please let the community know if these steps bring your Bluetooth back online! Because I am a new volunteer here, I am very eager to learn if this solution gets you back to work.

Are there any other devices or peripherals you are currently having trouble connecting to?

Hi Bhaskar,

Thank you for providing those screenshots; they are incredibly helpful for diagnosing exactly what is going wrong here.

Looking at your images, your Windows Services are perfectly configured and the Bluetooth Support Service is running exactly as it should. However, looking at your Device Manager (third image from the top), the Bluetooth category is completely missing from the hardware list.

When Windows cannot see the hardware at all, it usually means the device is either hidden by the operating system, turned off at the motherboard level, or physically disconnected/failed. Here are the next steps to force Windows to find it:

1. Reveal Hidden Devices

Sometimes, when a piece of hardware temporarily loses connection, Windows hides it from the main view.

  • Open Device Manager.

  • Click on View at the top menu bar.

  • Select Show hidden devices.

  • Check the list again. If "Bluetooth" appears but the icons are grayed out, it confirms Windows remembers the device but cannot physically communicate with it right now.

2. Check the BIOS Settings

If the hardware is turned off in the motherboard's fundamental settings, Windows will never be able to detect it.

  • Restart your computer.

  • As soon as the screen goes black, repeatedly tap the F10 key to enter the BIOS Setup screen.

  • Navigate to System Configuration -> Built-in Device Options.

  • Check the list for the Bluetooth device and ensure the box next to it is checked (Enabled).

  • Save your changes and exit to boot back into Windows.

3. Reseat the Physical Network Card

The HP ProBook 4540s uses a physical combo card (handling both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth) plugged directly into the motherboard. Over time, this card can become slightly loose, causing the Bluetooth half of the chip to drop out. If you are comfortable opening the bottom panel:

  • Turn off the laptop, unplug it, and remove the battery.

  • Slide the release latches to remove the bottom service door.

  • Locate the Wireless module (it will have two small antenna wires connected to it).

  • Carefully unscrew it, pull it out of its slot, and firmly push it back in to ensure a solid connection.

If none of these steps bring the Bluetooth category back to your Device Manager, the physical Bluetooth chip on your wireless card has likely failed and the internal card will need to be replaced.

When you click "Show hidden devices" in the Device Manager, does the Bluetooth category reappear with grayed-out icons?
