On the HP EliteBook 8560p laptop; which has WWAN, driver, mobile bandwidth, etc., and everything is correct. I inserted a SIM card to connect to the Internet, but the laptop does not read the SIM card and writes: insert the SIM card. What is the problem?

Welcome to the HP Community --

The hardware for the WWAN module - parts, regional requirements, installation / replacement are explained throughout the service manual.

HP EliteBook 8560p Notebook PC and HP ProBook 6560b Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide

SIM card placement, also an auxiliary part:

Service Guide > For example, Pages 24 and 63

Note... All typed on the fly -- ignore errors or odd wording...

If the SIM card is recognized when inserted into the correct Port in the battery bay - that is, the SIM card is appropriate for the Port and is correct for the Service Provider in the region - AND if the card is a recent enough physical version of that SIM card hardware,  (then) Settings > Network & internet will display the known information about the installed card.

What can go wrong?

So many things... including (and not limited to)...

  • Incorrect insertion - backwards, upside down, bent, not making contact
  • Dead SIM card or one that has been disabled
  • The SIM card does not match the region, the intended service provider
  • WWAN module or the SIM card are not powered / enabled / activated
  • Missing WWAN driver
  • Missing Windows Updates
  • Outdated BIOS

If the SIM card is tied to an active Cellular Service Account for the service, that information will be displayed in Settings > Network & internet

If there is no service account attached to the SIM card, the displayed information  in Settings > Network & internet will include the description: "No service".

Note:  The system can still make use of a recognized and properly installed WWAN setup using a HotSpot on another device that does have a Cellular service account.

The Device Manager displays detected hardware

Sample Device Manager Check > WWAN hardware > Devices by type

Control Panel > icon view > Device Manager

Tab View

Check Show hidden devices

Select Devices by type

Expand section Network Adapters

Right-Click on the LTE service module > Properties

Tab General > Item Device Status

Tab Details  > Item Property Device description

Example - Device Manager - LTE - WWAN Model / Driver
