Hi @Ollie82,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When you encounter an error message while trying to print with your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978, it can be frustrating, but there are several troubleshooting steps you can follow to resolve the issue. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you diagnose and fix the problem.

Check for Error Message: Take note of the exact error message displayed on the printer or your computer screen. This will provide valuable information about the issue.

Verify Connections:

  • Ensure that the printer is properly connected to your computer or network.
  • Check that the power cable and data cable (USB or Ethernet) are securely connected to the printer and your computer.
  • If you're using a wireless connection, make sure the printer is connected to your Wi-Fi network.

Restart the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for about 30 seconds.
  • Plug the printer back in, turn it on, and allow it to initialize.

Check for Paper Jams:

  • Open the printer's paper input tray and access areas to check for any paper jams or obstructions. Remove any jammed paper carefully.

Update Printer Drivers:

  • Outdated or incompatible printer drivers can cause printing errors. Visit the HP website and download the latest drivers for your printer model.

Restart Your Computer:

  • Sometimes, a simple computer restart can resolve printing issues caused by software glitches.

Clear Print Queue:

  • If you're using a Windows computer, open the "Print Queue" and cancel any pending print jobs. On a Mac, you can clear the print queue by going to "System Preferences" > "Printers & Scanners" > select your printer > click "Open Print Queue" > and cancel any pending jobs.

Reset the Printer:

  • HP printers have a reset option. Navigate to the printer's control panel or settings menu, and look for the reset or restore factory settings option. This can help clear any internal errors.

Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Go to the HP website and check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer. Updating the firmware can resolve compatibility issues.

Run Print and Scan Doctor:

  • HP provides a free diagnostic tool called "HP Print and Scan Doctor" that can automatically identify and fix common printing problems. Download and run this tool to see if it can resolve the issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
