Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have noticed there is delay in connecting to the internet after opening the lid to my laptop. It take longer than 30 seconds to connect, which seems excessive based on my past experiences. If I run network troubleshooting prior to it connecting, the network adapter is reset, which resolves the problem. Otherewise if I just wait, it will eventually connect on its own. I have also tried rebooting my router and restoring it to factory settings.

My laptop is set to sleep upon closing the lid.

I have made sure that my wifi adapter driver has been updated. I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. I have updated the BIOS as well. My wifi adapater is Realtek rtl8723be 802.11 bgn. The driver version is 2023.66.1104.2017.

First of all you should revert the power management setting back to Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power if this did not help.

I assume you also tried to remove the autodetection of the proxy settings. If that did not help, you can leave it disabled if the network still works as before.

Also I forgot to ask if you have run the troubleshooter (From Settings -> Status)

A bit more drastic thing would be to try a Network Reset (from Network & Internet Settings -> Status)

Would be best to be on a wired connection for this in case you need some updated drivers. I know that at least Dell has driver version 2023.70.1113.2017 on Windows Update and Lenovo has it on their download site. Don't know if it helps with your issue but at least it would fix the issues with the WPA2 protocol security that were discovered a while ago.

I suggest you go in Device Manager (WinKey+X then Device Manager) .

Open the Network Adapters list and right click on the Realtek wireless and select Properties. Then select the Power Management tab and unselect the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power and click on ok.

Sometimes the devices/drivers do not handle the sleep very well, so this is worth a try.

That did not work, unfortunately. When I try to navigate to a web site, the status message in the the lower left hand corner displays "resolving host" and "downloading proxy script". After about 30 seconds, it finally connects on its own. Often I see the yellow exclamation point on top of the wifi icon in the system tray before it finally connects.

I don't think it's the root cause but if there is initial sluggishness to begin with the automatic proxy detection may cause a fairly long extra delay.

If you actually are not behind a proxy server you can disable the detection.

For example in Chrome you can find it from Settings then select Settings on the top left of the Windows again and then Advanced ->System ->Open Proxy Settings-> Connections-> LAN settings and then unselect the Automatically detect settings. Of course if you really are behind a proxy server you would then need to manually  enter the neccessary information.

Have you noticed any difference in the delay/operation depending on which network/WiFi router you connect to?

Are you connecting to a visible or to a hidden network? Connecting to a hidden network takes more time.

this issue doesn't happen on my husband's laptop. it's only mine. i haven't compared it to other wifi networks at this point.

Updating to that latest driver did the trick. Thank you!

As it turns out, this did not solve the problem. As a matter of fact, it seems worse.  I could always revert back to the previous driver?

Too bad:smileysad:

Yes, you can install any version. Check if there is an antry in the  Apps & Features to uninstall first. If not you can just uninstall the device in Device manager by right clicking.

Did you check that the driver version is still the one that you installed. Just to see that no update has changed it in between?

You could first just  try just uninstalling the device in the Device manager and then click on Check for hardware changes and let Windows re-install the current version.
