hp pavillion notebook 15-n258tx
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I installed windows 7, installed all drivers, but the wireless connectivity icon at bottom right has a red cross mark, I tried to troubleshoot it, the troubleshooter said  press the wireless connectivity switch, and finally it said "wireless capability is turned off" and the problem persists. What should I do

Hi:

This is the latest driver for the model wifi adapter your notebook has.

5.0.53.0 Rev.D

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp71001-71500/sp71421.exe

This is the Bluetooth driver you need...

11.0.759.0 Rev.C

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp70501-71000/sp70570.exe

If the drivers are installed, the only suggestion I can offer would be to install the HP connection manager software, restart the PC and use the HP connection manager software to turn on the wifi adapter.

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp64501-65000/sp64815.exe

You may also need to press the F12 key to turn on the wifi.  The key with the airplane icon.

Thanks for the quick reply. To install your recommended drivers, Would I need to uninstall the previously installed drivers?

You're very welcome.

You can try it either way.

Normally the new driver overwrites the old one automatically.

You can check the driver version number and date before and after you install the driver.

I installed your provided drivers, and hp connection manager, but the problem still persists, the red mark still present and wireless connectivity still is not working. What would you suggest now? Wifi was working properly on windows 10

I saw the bios system configuration. Under both UEFI boot order and Legacy boot order, there is an exclamation mark(!) before network adapter. What does it mean? I am mentioning it because it may help to solve the problem

I don't know what that means, but it can't be good.

Go to the device manager in Windows.

Click to expand the Network Adapters device manager category.

Do you see both the Realtek ethernet adapter and the Ralink 3290 wifi adapter listed there?

HP Recommended

Three things listed there

  1. Microsoft Virtual Wifi Miniport Adapter
  2. Ralink RT3290 802.11.bgn Wi-Fi Adpater #3
  3. Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller

That all looks good to me.

And when you click on the Ralink RT3290 802.11.bgn Wi-Fi Adapter #3 device, it reports working properly?

What I would do, is to go into the BIOS, reset it to its defaults, restart the PC and see what happens.

I have reset the bios, it works properly. No progress. Additionally I have done all that mentioned in the following post. What next?
