Dano, it sounds like your suffering from the glitch microsoft put out to make old XP computers seem broken or slow, and make you buy a new one. I just got done spending 2 days figuring it out. The SVChost is running like that because windows update is trying to run, and with the current bug of having to check every single patch in IE if it's not up to date when it checks it, it can't. It will just sit there for hours, working your cpu. First, turn off auto updates and then restart it. Go to microsoft and download the latest cumulative security update for IE8 manually and install it, then restart the computer and try using update manually. That is just the first part of the bug. Yes, before you replace anything (or reformat or anything drastic), UNPLUG THE LAPTOP FROM THE MAINS..
Then see if it suddenly 'speeds up'...
If so, the PSU is probably your problem....
