HP Elitebook 8470p A1029D1102
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hello,

I have got a HP 8470p (A1029D1102)  with 179B KBC Version 42.38 board. OS Windows 7 Pro 64bit.

Actually I have one 4Gb RAM module installed and I would like to upgrade to 16Gb (2x8Gb modules).

The memory type suitable for this notebook is DDR3 (or DDR3L), 204pin, PC-3, 1600Mhz 12800.

I don't know if the modules that I am going to use as memory upgrade have to be "single" or "dual" channel.

My question is- which is the most effeicient and reliable type of RAM upgrade suitable for this notebook?

Actually, surfing the web, I have found a "kit" (2 modules 8Gb/ea "matched" ... ) of the brand A-Tech at a very reasonable price (US$ 69.00) but I don't know anything about this brand.

Finally, what are the correct parameters to be teaken in account while buying a 16Gb RAM upgrade in order to don't have any kind of problem during installation and use?

Thank you pretty much for any help.

The best way to upgrade and purchgase memory that works as expected when installed is to only purchase guaranteed compatible memory modules form a well know memory manufacturer.

The memory manufacturer and vendor stand by their products and guarantee they will work. They have their company name at stake in the market.

Crucial memory

Corsair Memory

KIngston Memory

Using the capacity, type and bandwidth specs to purchase memory can be hit or miss and disappointing

oYu will save a lot of time by making sure that the memory you have selected as candidate  modules for your laptop are guaranteed compatible. Let the manufacturers perform the experimentation in their QA labs instead of going through the hassle of doing it yourself.

Hi,

From its specs:

MEMORY
Standard
DDR3 PC3-12800 SDRAM (1600 MHz)
Two SODIMM slots supporting dual-channel memory
Standard memory up to 8192 MB (2 GB, 4 GB, and 8 GB SODIMMs)
Maximum
16384 MB
Dual-channel
Maximized dual-channel performance requires SODIMMs of the same size and speed in both memory slots.
NOTE: Due to the non-industry standard nature of some third-party memory modules, we recommend HP branded memory to ensure compatibility. If you mix memory speeds, the system will perform at the lower memory speed. With Windows Starter 32-bit operating systems, the amount of usable memory is dependent upon your configuration, so that above 3 GB all memory may not be available due to system resource requirements.

Please download and run the following tool:

      http://www.cpuid.com/downloads/cpu-z/cpu-z_1.72.1-en.exe

Look at the SPD tab, it will tell you all RAM parameters including brand. For compability, it is much better to use the same brand with the existing brand.

Thank you.

I didn't understand if CPU-Z returns the parameters of the installed RAM or gives informations about "what parameter RAM should have".

It will show information for installed/existing RAM and you can use this information to buy RAM

@banhien

The problem iwith using the method you have suggested is that he is not interested in purchgasing the same memory module capacity to upgrade to 8GB.

He wants to upgrade to 16 GB.

That is the reason I recommended using the  Memory manufacturers website utilities to find compatible 8 GB modules.

Once he knows which modules are guaranteed compatible by the manufacturer with his notebook ,then he can find a local vendor or search online to purchase the modules.

@erico

My reply: "It will show information for installed/existing RAM and you can use this information to buy RAM". Sorry if that is not clear. The question is parameters and SPD tab shows all paramters of RAM including manufacturer. No need to use same manufacturer from the existing. Now the poster needs 2 x 8GB, it is much better to buy 2 sticks from SAME manufacturer.

Hope this is clearer.

Regards.

Hello,

first of all thank you  both for the helpful info.

I have learned something more in handling memories upgrade for laptops. At the end I have choosen a 16Gb kit from Crucial by ecploring their site, as suggested by Erico, which ensures full compatibility and dual channel mode.

Thank you pretty much for the kind help.
