I want to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 8.1, but am unsure if the machine can support the 64bit version. How can I determine how to proceed? Vince

Hi:

The T7250 processor is capable of running a 64 bit operating system.

Below is the link to the specs from Intel for that processor...

I highly recommend you run the W8.1 Upgrade Assistant before purchasing the W8.1 operating system.

You will not find any W8.1 drivers on your notebook's support page.

Hi:

I guess I was not clear in what I needed...

Which one of these processors does your PC have?

I believe that all of them are 64 bit capable, but I want to confirm from Intel's specs.

What I see is a bigger problem is that there are no drivers for W8.1 for your model notebook, and several components may not work on W8.1

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T9500 (2.60-GHz, 800-MHz FSB, 6-MB L2 cache)*

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T9300 (2.50-GHz, 800-MHz FSB, 6-MB L2 cache)*

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T8300 (2.40-GHz, 800-MHz FSB, 3-MB L2 cache)*

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T8100 (2.10-GHz, 800-MHz FSB, 3-MB L2 cache)*

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7700 (2.40-GHz, 800-MHz FSB, 4-MB L2 cache)*

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7500 (2.20-GHz, 800-MHz FSB, 4-MB L2 cache)*

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7300 (2.00-GHz, 800-MHz FSB, 4-MB L2 cache)*

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7250 (2.00-GHz, 800-MHz FSB, 2-MB L2 cache)*

Intel Celeron Processor 560 (2.10-GHz, 533-MHz FSB, 1-MB L2 cache)*

Intel Celeron Processor 545 (2.00-GHz, 533-MHz FSB, 1-MB L2 cache)*

Hi again, the sticker on the outside says Intel Centrino; the label over the processor says:
Model: WM3945ABG-002
Assy: 396331-002
Spares: 407576-002
CT: GB86A0BBAVL5VM
SN:   (Personal information removed)
System manager reports: Intel Core 2 Duo cpu T7250@2Ghz
Hope this fills in the gaps. Vince

Thanks, I've run the assistant with the following results:
Install an app to play DVDs
Secure boot isn't compatible
Screen resolution needs to change to 1366x768 to snap apps
iTunes: remove unauthorised PCs
Microsoft net framework 1.1 needs to be reinstalled in 8
Internet explorer 8 update available
Windows messenger 5.1 go to app website for help
everything else reports compatible
Any concerns? Thanks

You're very welcome.

Based on the report I don't see any show-stoppers, but since I have never tested W8.1 on your model all I can do is guess that it might be OK.

I am testing the W10 technical preview on my HP 6930p and it seems to be working OK, but that has slightly newer hardware than yours does.

If you go through with installing W8.1 and run into any driver issues, please let me know and I'll see what I can do to help.

Paul, that's really reassuring; I had been told that processor wouldn't support 64bit, but wasn't convinced. I'll upgrade next week and give some feedback, good or bad! Many thanks. Vince

You're very welcome, Vince.

I am hoping we can find all the drivers you need to get everything to work.

The 64 bit incompatibility is a non-issue.
