Has anyone gotten anything other than 2 channel audio over HDMI on the Elitebook 8530p? I have tried different drivers directly from ATI and HP. I tested it on WinXP x86 and Win7 x64. Windows always lists the audio channel configuration as 2 channel stereo. Is this a limitation of the hardware?

Hi again,

I don't have a 5.1 system to try to simulate your problem with on with my Probook 4540s.

However, I did a little more digging and found that someone had a similar problem on this forum about a year ago. They were able to find a solution that might be helpful to you:

Good luck!

I am not familiar with the specific 8530p audio hardware capabilities, but everything I know about HDMI in general indicates that it supports 5.1 Dolby Audio.

On my 4540s, when I run an HDMI cable directly to the TV(Stereo only) I notice that it cuts out my desktop speakers.

I don't know your exact configuration, but it seems like the HP site has at least the beginnings of a pretty good troubleshooting procedure at this link:

It might put you in the right ballpark, at least, for finding the answer to your question.

Audio output depends on the Hardware that you connect the HDMI cable to.

Can you tell what are you connecting the HDMI cable to?

If its a TV then you will get only 2 channels as TV don't have 6 speaker configuration.

If you connect it to a receiver that supports 5.1 or 7.1 over HDMI then you must first configure it to receive 6 or 8 channel audio.

Its connected to a Denon AVR-890 AVR which then is connected to a TV.

The AVR is able to receive multi channel audio from my Xbox 360, blu-ray or satellite receiver.

The LED indicator on thie AVR only shows 2 channel from this laptop.

If I right-click the speaker in the Windows system tray -> Playback Devices -> select AMD HDMI -> click Configure, the only option is Stereo.

One other item I found from a similar problem on another forum, was the fact that HDMI audio is very "finicky". It typically requires a reboot of the PC every time you make a configuration change on the amplifier/receiver/TV end. It appears that it could require some trial and error. Sorry, I can't offer more specific assistance...
