4-6-2016: Had the same issue on my Presario F700 and my newer Linksys EA6300 router. Not even the computer repair place could fgure this one out. I told them of my Google search here and they slapped their heads, going OF COURSE...the old routers weren't AC and AC didn't exist when the F700s and similiar were manufactured. How I fixed this was to download the update (SP54972) found here onto a flash drive. Took that drive over to my laptop and downloaded  it into a folder. Then open up the Control Panel, click on Device Manager and clicked on the + for Network Adapters. You want to update the Atheros adapter but you want the computer  search to be in the folder where you just loaded the adapter update. This is a critical step not mentioned elsewhere in this forum. You must update your adapter here. Mine was an Atheros AR5007 802.11 b/g. Once I told it where to update this adapter driver in the folder I had just loaded, Boom, it was updated and I had finally have internet thru my newere router. Many thanks HP!!!!!

You're very welcome.

Yes, sometimes you have to do what you did, but that is not always the case.  Most folks simply run the above driver and it fixes the issue.

And I have helped dozens of forum members over the last 5 years with this issue and have given them those steps when the auto install doesn't work.

What I don't understand is why it doesn't work because that version of the driver's release notes state:

FIXES:
- Fixes an issue where installation of the updated driver fails if the previous
driver has not been uninstalled before installing the updated driver.

I have also given recommendations when neither method works, to uninstall the Atheros wireless card in the device manager, check the uninstall driver box if applicable, reboot the PC and then try reinstalling the driver.

Also, it has nothing to do with the router being AC.

It has to do with the older Atheros drivers not having support for the newer WPA2-Personal security.
