Hi,

I've a "system" process that about 30% CPU for doing nothing. This happens every time I start my computer. when put in sleep mode and wake it aftermath, that solves the problem, but it happens again at the next start, or it can also come back at random moments.

The issue come from ACPI.sys according to Windows Performance Recorder and it's occured just after updating the BIOS recently.

My question is how can I downgrade the BIOS ?

Factory reseting my computer can solve the problem?

Any help appreciated ! Thank you in advance.

Hi @Apsul

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I see that you get 30% CPU even when the system is not running any process.

Since this has been happening after the BIOS update, you can downgrade it using the link here. You can expand BIOS, click on the HP Firmware Pack (Intel Processors) and go to the previous version option.

Before we move into performing a system reset, you can try the below steps and let me know if you see any difference.

Sometimes the ACPI.sys issue happens if your system files are corrupt. So you should run SFC (System File Checker), the built-in Windows tool to scan for and restore corruptions in Windows system files if it detects any.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and type cmd. Then right-click on Command Prompt and click Run as administrator.
  2. Click Yes when asked to confirm.
  3. In the command prompt window, type sfc /scannow and press Enter. It’ll take some time for the SFC to replace the corrupted system files with new ones if it detects any, so please be patient. ?
  4. Restart your computer and check if the issue persists.

You can also run a disk check:

Disk errors may also be the reason why you get the ACPI.sys blue screen. You can try doing a disk check to see if it works. Disk check is a useful in-built Windows tool that scans our hard disk and external drives for errors and fix them.

  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and E at the same time, then click This PC.
  2. Right-click on Local Disk and click Properties.
  3. Click the Tools tab > Check.
  4. Click Scan drive.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions for Windows to detect and fix the errors found.
  6. Restart your computer and see if it fixes the ACPI.sys error.

If the issue persists, we can perform a system restore.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi @Nirvana_95,

Thank you for your response.

I've already perform a disk and file system scan, nothing was detected, but the issue still persist.

I also forget to mention that I tried to downgrade my bios using an old version, but this is not working either, I just got a message telling me "The system BIOS recovery failed. Unable to open BIOS Signature file".

Hence my question, a system reset, can downgrade this driver for me?

Thank you.

Thanks for getting back to us.

If the above steps didn't work, we can perform a system reset and it should solve the issue. Please note that a system reset will not downgrade the driver of the BIOS. However, by doing that we will get a confirmation that the issue is not with the Operating System.

Please keep me posted.

Hi,

the problem isnt with the OS, but the BIOS update.

I don't see the point of doing a factory reset if the BIOS is not downgraded. Why can't I install an earlier version of the driver?

Thanks.

In that case, I would suggest you try recovering the BIOS. Here is a link that will help: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c02693833

Also, may I know if you see the older version of BIOS on the HP website?

Let me know.

Hi,

I've already tried to downgrade the driver by installing a version older than mine by following these instructions, but it doesn't work, I get an error telling me:
"The system BIOS recovery failed. Unable to open BIOS Signature file"

So, HP prevents to make a downgrade, I just wanted to know why.
