Honestly, the only thing I can think of that the battery must have failed. Is the laptop still under warranty? If so, you can contact HP support and they can send you a replacement battery. (In the US, they usually ship next day).

Yes, it's still under warranty. However, it was purchased from amazon.com about 2 months ago. I am located in the middle east (deployed) and apparently lithium batteries are not allowed to be sent over here anymore. I chatted online with an HP rep and he said that HP would mail a box with info on how to return it to HP (didn't realize I was deployed). I'm not sure if you can ship a battery here, but that'd be great to know

Try the steps list in this link: http://www.avinashtech.com/computers/solution-battery-plugged-charging/

Other's have reported success with this method. Besure to try the alternative method of the first one doesn't work.

For all laptops these days there is three conductor cable that goes from the power supply to the laptop. The outer ring you see is the negative part of the terminal, inside the connector there is an inner positive ring. The very center is a pin which is "sense". Almost always the thin wire going to the sense terminal has broken. If you crack open the case for the power supply (you don't need to) and take an ohm meter you will see an open circuit from the center pin to the thin wire inside the power supply. You can cut the rubbery strain relief on the computer side with and exacto lengthwise, be careful and you can reuse it with some electrical tape. Desolder the three wires from the terminal, cut about 6" from the remaining wire, strip the wire, resolder to terminal and you're done. All of the crap like: unplug, wait, change bios, dance on one foot, etc. only "work" temporarily because you're flexed the intermittent bad connection.

I SOLVED THE PROBLEM! I didn't have to toss the computer in the ocean.

I uninstalled a couple of updates, reinstalled them, and then since it's very dusty here used some canned air and BAM it worked! Charged and everything. Very weird.

I'll keep what you said in mind though Chris, in case of future problems...which we all know about computers

Mine has the same problem. It's in the connector from my power cord to my laptop. My son broke it, so we soldered it back together, but now it acts up and has to be at just the right angle to charge. It may be that something is bent inside your laptop where it receives the plug.

Actually now it's back to saying plugged in not charging, not sure what happened. I am ready to toss this computer in the ocean. I can buy a new battery either because USPS won't allowed batteries to be shipped (especially overseas)! SO I am screwed

I have only had my computer, a dm1 4170us, for about 3 months and am incountering the same problem. But three days ago my battery wouldn't charge and my unit told me the battery needed to be replaced, now it still isn't charging but hp advisor tells me the battery is OK when I run a check, though it clearly isn't and reads 0% charge.

Yeah exactly. Mine is was at 32% the other night, now it's down to 29%...I never unplugged it, I run a battery test through the support assistant and they say it's fine, but when I do it at the restart screen, it say it fails..not sure what the deal is at this point.

Actually, after my post last night I downloaded and installed hp support assistant again (though I already had it installed) and after running the hp battery test it said that the battery had failed and needed to be replaced as soon as possible.

So now my obvious questions will be; Will hp replace the battery under the warranty, being as I purchased the unit less than three months ago? Is  there a place in Santa Cruz, Ca. that I can get a new battery under the warranty without having to waste half a day and $30 in gas to go over the hill to San Jose? And, being as I purchased the computer inline from hp, can they just send me the new battery and have me send the old one back to them in the same packaging post paid, or do I need to waste more of my time and money for their faulty merchandise that didn't even last for 3 months?

The reason I chose this computer was the extended battery life (which they claimed would be much longer than it has been, regardless the settings)   so I could get through a day at school without being tethered to a wall socket, and now the battery doesn't work at all, so I have to waste time looking for solutions.
