Wondering if anyone else knows what a repair status of "PROBABLY BEYOND ECONOMIC REPAIR" means. The HP support rep could not tell me!!
Had spill on laptop that corrupted motherboard (had accidental coverage). Sent to HP Depot for repair. Called support to ask what status means and how long it will take. After holding for 10 minutes and the rep taking that long again to look up the information, they could only tell me that HP is shipping a box to me. Now, that is helpful!
Does "beyond economic repair" mean HP is replacing it with a new computer?
If so, will the new computer come with Windows 7 preloaded?
Will it have Office on it, which the original one did?
Thanks

Don't panic yet. If you had the accidental damage protection they will likely replace it with comparable new hardware but it will have standard new software. If you have the Office Key Code that can be reinstalled.

I purchased the 2-year "Care Pack" (a year ago) that includes onsite service and accidental damage protection. So, I don`t know why they would be returning it to me.
The computer stopped functioning after an HP technician worked on it.
It sounds like this is going to be a continuing nightmare and now a fight with HP.

Have you heard anything yet? I have a similar issue. I have the care program and previously used it to repair a cracked screen. My laptop was there and back in 5 days. This time there is a software issue and possible hardware issue and the site says "probaby beyond economic repair" "contact HP support" and "will be updated once product is received". They received the laptop last week (exactly 7 days ago) they sent an email confirming it. And when I checked the site and it says contact HP, so I contacted HP. The only thing the could tell me was that they have received it. When I asked what they ment by BER. The only thing they could tell me was that they have received it. The web site still hasnt had a status update. I work in tech support for another company and when our products are listed BER if the customer had the extended warrenty it means a new one (comparible if the same product is unavailable) will be sent out.
LOL, so after all of that, my question is have you heard anything about yours?

Yes, I did --- good news for me, but how it turns out is very dependent on the circumstances. . . . It means that the computer would cost more to repair than to replace. However, a decision has to be made about whether or not a replacement falls under the warranty (see below).
Here is what I recommend: Call Customer Service and ask them to elevate your case to a Case Manager. This will get you some useful information within a couple of days or so. (Otherwise, I imagine it could be weeks.) They will ask you information about the issue. Getting a Case Manager should accelerate things for you.
I had a chain of issues resulting from an original spill and subsequent work HP technicians did as a result of it. So, HP is replacing my laptop. (I am told this takes about three weeks.) I emphasized that the issues all resulted from one original spill and authorized work that HP technicians performed on the computer.
I hope you have a similar, perhaps clear-cut situation. Here is the catch: The accidental coverage, if applicable to your case, only covers one incident per year. If yours was one accident and your computer was under the accidental care warrantly period, it seems like they should cover it.
Best of luck.
