Hello, I just bought a new m6-1045dx and I have been trying to get the fingerprint scanner to work. I currently have Simplepass Identity Protection downloaded, but it says "Program operation error. Please restart computer..." When I tried to fix the problem via Biometric Devices, they were not present in the control panel OR device manager. Help?

It almost sounds like the fingerprint driver is missing.
IF that is the case, then a new install of the driver is in order:
Validity Fingerprint Sensor Driver sp56957 V4.3.304.0
- Save the exe file on to your computer, say into Downloads and then install it.
- If you get an error from the straight install - something like, driver already present.. then
- You can try just reinstalling the driver that is already on the system as shown below...
- Control Panel > icon view > Device Manage > Biometric Devices > Validity Sensor >
- Right-Click on the Sensor > Uninstall
- Restart / Reboot the computer and let the driver install during the login / restart
The general rule is ALWAYS:
Drivers install FIRST
Software installs second
Never forget that rule.

SideBar:
I could not find SimplePass at your computer's website.
- What is your exact SimplePass version?
This MAY be your version:
SimplePass 2012 sp56487 V5.4.0.402
Do not delete your SimplePass, particularly not until you verify your version. IF it is different from the one shown above, let me know so I can get you another.

If the Driver (re)install works, you are done.
IF not,
then
- After you get the Driver installed, you might have to "Repair" your SimplePass.
Try to Repair the SImplePass Software:
Control Panel > Programs and Features >
Look for this program:
Right-Click on HP SimplePass
Select "Repair"
Restart / Reboot your system
Try SimplePass Again...

Okay, when I try to download the driver, it opens up the window. I click next, I click I agree to the terms, clicked the location to save the files, then it begins extracting files. A pop up shows that says "The following file is already on your computer: C:\SWSetup\sp56957\autorun.inf, do you wish to overwrite this file?" and when I click yes, another file comes up with the same message. When I press "yes to all," it finishes extracting in about 2 seconds, then the window just closes, and nothing else happens. So I go to device manage, and biometric devices is not on there. ??? The downloading isn't working I think.

Oh. And I believe I uninstalled simplepass earlier because it was not working, but did not reinstall it. So I just tried installing the link you sent me, and mid-install, everything I had running (chrome, itunes, etc) all closed, including the downloader.

OKAY last reply until you reply, sorry. Biometric devices are now showing up on control panel, but it says "there are no fingerprint readers attached to this computer or all the fingerprint readers are being used by programs." Biometric devices are not showing up on device manager.

OK... Try this:
- Reboot your system, interrupt the Boot right away by tapping F10 to get into the BIOS...
- Look around in the Configuration and see if there is a setting for the Fingerprinter / Biometric Device
- If you find one, make sure it is ENABLED
- SAVE and EXIT (if you change the settings), else ESC to exit without change.
- Boot to Windows.
- CHECK settings.
If nothing in Device Manager > Biometric Devices
THEN
- Remove SimplePass from Programs, it won't do any good without the Driver.
- Disconnect all external devices: external drives, external speakers...
- It appears the Driver is still not installed, else you would see it in Control Panel >Device Manager > Biometric Devices
- Do that Hard Reset - Boot into Windows
- Don't connect your external drives and speakers yet (it's just a precaution, not a big deal... go ahead and connect them now if it really bugs you).
- Don't start up a bunch of programs, maybe just Chrome and this link, if needed.
- Try to install just the Driver
- Check Control Panel > con view > Device Manager > Biometric Devices > for the Validity Sensor Driver
If you can get that Driver to install, THEN you can install the SimplePass software.

Okay, I went into bios and there is no option for biometric devices, so I tried the second thing, to remove simplepass, reboot and try to install, and it, again, did not install, and again, Biometric Devices is not showing up in device manager 😕

That was a bit confusing...
I am assuming you meant you removed SimplePass
and tried to install the Validity Sensor Driver.
Unless you can get that driver to install, you are Toast.
Maybe a different driver would do it, but I am not sure why the wrong driver would be listed on your website. And, if that is the wrong driver, then you'd need a different version of the Software. All things I can do...
However, this may not be the right response to the situation.
New system = Call HP
Contact HP – USA and Worldwide
I hate to do that to you, but you have to get the Validity Sensor driver installed so you can install the SimplePass Software. Something is wrong and redoing things over and over is not fixing it.
If you would do so, I'd like you to call Support for help with this and see what they say about it.
