Yesterday I was closing my laptop, and I heard this loud cracking sound. Apparently a good portion of the bezel suddenly separated from the screen.

Is there a way to manually repair this or does it have to be sent in?

(The computer is a HP G70-250US and I bought it in early 2009. It's out of warranty.)

It could be repaired by you, I don't know what your skills are so here is what I would do.

Disassemble and Remove the bezel and determine if you only need the bezel or the screen back or any other parts

Determine part numbers needed by contacting HP parts, order the parts

http://partsurfer.hp.com/ContactUs.aspx

Install new parts.

I cannot find a service manual for that model G70, to show you the disassembly procedures.

Here you may find service documentation for G70. On page 56 in Display assembly chapter you will find informations how to replace bezel.

To find correct part you will need to know your notebook part number (p/n) . You'll find it at the bottom of the laptop on a sticker, which looks like this. This what you are looking for you will find in Chassis Parts -> Bezel category on HP PartSurfer. As suggested by Mumbodog it would be recommended to check first which parts need to be replaced before you will purchase anything. If it's to complicated for you then it would be much better to do it in laptop service.

Thank you, I'll look into this. 🙂

Just a kind of dumb question: how will I know what needs replacing? For the record, the screen and everything works just fine (I'm using the laptop right now), but the bezel and the bar the lid pivots on seem to be the problem:

Looks like a hinge problem that got worse, its hard to say on a forum, you just have to know what you are looking at, look for anything that is damaged, cracked or broken, its a big job for the inexperienced. It will require a lot of disassembly.

I guess I'll have to try bringing it down to a local tech shop. Thanks for the replies. 🙂

I agree then it's very hard to recognize the problem on this photos. I'm even not sure which side is showed on last screenshot.
