Hi

I've got a HDD that has started to make funny noises and I expect it to fail pretty soon. And while that is depressing in it's own right I feel I should do the best of the situation and and put in a fast SSD instead of the old thing. But before I go and buy the equipment I need to know that it can actually be done. I have read another thread on this forum about putting a SSD in the expansion slot (CD/DVD) but I want to replace the main HDD. So, my best guess is that it is possible but if there are any people here with experience, please guide me in how to proceed.

I have made a backup of all my important files so really the only thing I want to do is remove my old HDD and put a new one in and then install Windows 7 from the discs that followed with the computer.

Thank you very much for your time and help.

Hi,

Nothing to stop you to replace an old HDD with a faster "modern" SSD. In theory you can use ANY SDD but on the safe side please use SSD from vendor(s) who guarantees its product will work such as the following vendor:

    http://www.crucial.com/eu/upgrade/HP+-+Compaq-memory/EliteBook/EliteBook+8540w+Mobile+Workstation+%2...

The upgrade process is very simple (I actually put one Crucial 960Gb to one of my machines today). My suggestion: before doing hardware stuff, backup all files/data and prepare for a "big bang" (in my case, I cloned my old HDD therefore very fast). Please read the following articles for more information:

Will I need anything besides the disc and a screwdriver? Or is it as easy as replacing one disc with another? (I have changed ordinary laptop HDD's before but never even seen a SSD out in the open 😉 )
