Hi,
I can't see why not. I have installed linux on a laptop with Windows 10 and it worked well. Replaced the hard drive later with a solid drive with linux only but it still worked as a dual boot. Just enable the legacy mode in the BIOS and use a bootable live USB pendrive. Make sure that USB boot is the default option.

Whoever told you that, or wrote it in a forum or article online, was wrong.
Yes, you can install just about any flavor or derivative of Linux as the OS of an HP laptop.
People do it quite frequently.
It can install be installed as a single operating system or as a dual boot option on a single hard disk. The 15.6" notebook has a single disk, unlike the 17" notebooks with dual hard disk bays.
What exactly did you mean by signature edition? My HP product loan this year is the 2016 HP Envy Spectre. I would call it more of a product line as an OS flagship or top of the line edition notebook.

By Signature, it mean computer created in collaboration by microsoft and the brand. For example this hp spectre:
https://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msca/en_CA/pdp/HP-Spectre-x360-13-4196ms-Signature-Edition-2-in...
This question is very interesting, and even if this topic is a bit old, it does not have a real answer. it seems that microsoft and some computer makers did some trick on the raid driver to avoid linux to be installed.
Do you have any further information since the previous answers about the fact that the signatures models can prevent the linux installation? Some examples here:

Thank you.
