Hi,
I'd like to replace the existing drive to an SSD. Will my laptop accept an SSD?
Thank you,
David

Yes,
Your product site gives a link to usage of SSD, so it's possible.
http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02435719
Here is your manual: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03593672.pdf
HP has not tested SSD in your model,
but there's no problem in replacing the current HDD with SSD of 2.5" form factor, SATA II/III both are compatible.

You're welcome David 🙂
Be sure to make your recovery discs before going ahead with replacement
Back up all the personal data
If you're planning for reinstalling OS with recovery discs, SSD should be of size 500GB or greater, I assume you're system came with 500GB HDD
If you're going for 120/250GB SSDs you could do that too, but you may not be able to reinstall from recovery discs,
But there are two options for you:
-THIS CAN ONLY BE DONE IF USED DISC SIZE OF HDD IS LOWER THAN TOTAL SIZE OF SSD: migrate/clone while disc image of HDD to SSD before removing HDD by connecting USB to SATA adapter connector , with the help of migration/cloning utilities that will be available either from SSD manufacturer site or there are free ones available like Macrium Reflect, AOMEI Backupper, Acronis True image etc.
Format SSD before starting the migration process.
-you can also simply clean install your OS with available Windows ISO files, which you can find in this forum, you've to download necessary drivers from your product site: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4132&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=5322...
Windows product activation key is already embedded on to BIOS chip, so no need to worry about that, on installing SSD , clean OS will be activated automatically.

Thank you for following up with the issue.
I bought a Crucial M4 256GB that came with a Data Transfer Kit. However, no matter what I tried it would not work. I will try the Samsung 850 Pro this time. Hopefully, I will have better lucky with Samsung than with Crucial. I don't think Samsung's comes with the data cable though.
Again, thank you very much for following up with me.

How come it didn't work - cloning or SATA port?
I 'm planning for a Samsung Evo 840 , they're pretty good it seems among the ones now available in the market.
850 Pro is the latest addition I think - it'll be the best you can give it to your system.

The cloning went fine (at least I thought it did). It was the final stage - when I took out the HDD and installed the SSD - when I turned on the laptop, I got the black screen of death - nothingness!
I repeated the procedure several time over and got the same result. I got so frustrated I returned the SSD to Crucial:smileymad:

Sad it didn't work out first.
Did HP logo come on, or nothing at all came?
Did you check if all the partitions are cloned to SSD, including system reserved, recovery, boot, System partitions i.e., what all partitions were there in HDD should come to SSD. Check from Disk Management if all of them are cloned,
Which migration tool did you use, Use SSD MANUFACTURERS TOOLfirst,
If that don't with, then try Macrium Reflect / AOMEI Backupper.
Defragment whole HDD before starting the cloning process.
Format SSD before cloning using the tool.
Move the personal data, files out of HDD to external drive before cloning. Only the personal datas.
Make sure the Disc Image of HDD lesser than SSD size.
