When I try to burn a Word or Excel document to a CD, I will get the "Burn to CD" pop up window, but that's it.It won't go any further. I have an HP Dv7 laptop with Windows 8, 64 bit. I know the CD I'm using is a writable disc because I've burned other documents to this CD in the past, but all of a sudden it won't work. My PC recognizes the drive and I can open documents contained within, but for some reason the burn function no longer works. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Hi todj1,

I understand that you use to be able to burn CD's and now you cannot. I will try my best to help you resolve this issue. In order to assist you better, could you please tell me the full model or product number of your computer. Here is a document for How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number? Did you upgrade to Windows 8?

In the meantime, here is a document for CD or DVD Drive Cannot Burn Discs (Windows 😎 with steps that should help resolve your issue.

I hope this helps, please let me know.

Thank you and have a great day!

Thanks for your reply. I've tried just about every suggestion in the document you sent me except uninstalling/installing the CD/DVD software. I'm not a complete novice when it comes to this stuff, but this looks above my pay grade. And honestly, the cd problem is really just the tip of the iceberg with what's going on with my laptop. It's an HP Envy 7-7240us, product #C2H7OUA #ABA, running windows 8, 64bit. I purchased it about 16 months ago, so it's just out of warranty (figures). It was running great up until a week or so ago, then the wheels starting coming off. First, a thin horizontal pulsating line appeared in the lower portion of the monitor. I simple created a new restore point through system restore and it seemed to fix the problem. Obviously, it wasn't the monitor. Then my browser speed slowed down considerably. I implemented several things recommended by HP, but it only improved slightly. I set up the laptop to log off after 10 minutes of non use. Now, after I log on in the morning with my password, it never times out. It will go to sleep, but never logs off to where I have to reenter my password. Also, I have it set up to automatically download updates. I used to get a message letting me know about pending updates, i.e., 2 days until system will update, 1 day, etc. Then, the update would be installed when I shut down. It appears that the updates are being done, but I have to look them up to know because I no longer get these notices.  The bottom line is that it's not functioning like it should. I pulled up the devices on my hard drive and saw a note that said in affect that the PC was not working properly (no kidding) because Windows could not download the necessary drivers. When it comes to drivers, I'm pretty much clueless...what driver goes with what function, etc. I think it may be time to bite the bullet and run a complete system recovery and start over, or install the 8.1 upgrade. Which one is the easiest? Thanks again for letting me rant.

Hi todj1,

I am sorry that did not help. I really would like you to reinstall the drivers for your CD/DVD software and drivers. Here is a document for Using Recovery Manager to Restore Software and Drivers (Windows 😎 that will take you step by step on how to do it.

I also would like to address some of your other issues that you have been having since you restore your computer to a previous date. You may need only go to the Windows settings and change the settings back to alerting you of updates. The same would apply for setting your computer to shut off, as it is set to sleep mode by default. This document by Windows, Get help with PC settings has a lot of information on how to set up your computer to suit you. Also here is a document for Downloading or Updating Software and Drivers for HP Computers which should help with the updating of the missing drivers.

As for doing a system recovery or upgrading to Windows 8.1. That I would have to leave to your choice in what you would want. Here is some information from Microsoft on Windows 8.1 in detail so you can familiarize yourself with Windows 8.1 in order to make an informed decision.

I truly hope this information helps. Please let me know how it goes.

Good luck with your computer and have a great day!

I found the appropriate software application for the CD/DVD drive (Power2Go) for my laptop model and installed it but it didn't help.  I attempted to burn a document using this software application, but got the same error message that the disc I inserted into the drive is not a "readable" disc. Of course, it is a readable disc (I even purchased a new supply of "readable" cds), but the system isn't recognizing it as such. I ran the little diagnostic test on the optical drive through the HP Support Assistant and it shows a green check mark by all the functions listed under the DVD and CD drives, EXCEPT, it has an X beside the "write" function, as to indicate that it either isn't available or it isn't recognized.  This model came with a RW optical drive and I've downloaded documents before. I guess I will just have to belly up and pay for an HP tech to look at it or take it to a local shop.  Thanks for your effort in this matter. I appreciate it.
