It wasn't pretty but I got the ElitePad 900 to work. AFTER you do all the things I listed you needed to do above here is what I did next to get to work:
On an x86 win7 system I installed the WADK and then ran the Copype x86 c:\winpe_x86 command which built out the new 4.0 pe x86 environment onto c:\winpe_x86.
I did have to run DandISetEnv.bat to set the environment
Then I ran Makewinpemedia /ufd c:\winpe_x86 f: (as long as f: was the usb drive in this case)
What that did was build the thumb drive with a bootable backend INSTEAD OF DOING the normal diskpart/dism commands.
Then I mounted my x86 MDT .iso and copied the contents to my new thumb drive and had the EP900 in the docking station with a keyboard and pressed F9 to bring up the boot menu and it showed the USB and I stepped through the process.
I did have other issues such as having to build a unattend.xml for my win8 x86 but on an x86 MDT environment (My prod is x64) and then POINTING to my x64 MDT share and having it generate the unattend... Many things documented elsewhere on the web. Hopefully you don't have to go through all of that.
NOW my problem is the EP900 isn't grabbing ANY drivers once I do image it from my MDT... even though I DL'ed the driver pack for win8x86 and plugged it into MDT.

The steps below have worked flawlessly for me. The only issue I have now is how I can make this work with a Ghost Boot Disk. If anyone has any ideas regarding this, it would be greatly appreciated.
1. Insert 4GB or larger flash drive into usb port on your computer.
2. Open an elevated command prompt and type the following commands pressing enter after each command.
- diskpart
- list disk (note the disk # for your flash drive as you will need it for the next command)
- select disk # (enter the disk # from the prior step in place of the number sign)
- clean
- create partition primary
- format fs=fat32 quick
- active
- assign
- list volume
- exit
3. Extract contents of a Windows 8 x86 (32 bit) ISO to the flash drive your just created.
4. Remove the flash drive from your computer and insert it into an Elitepad usb port.
5. Power on the Elitepad and hold the volume down key in until you see the BIOS Startup screen.
6. Press/Select "F9 Boot Options"
7. Press/Select "USB Hard Drive"
8. Your Elitepad will now go into the Windows 8 setup/installation.
This works great if you want to install Windows 8, but if anyone has any ideas on how to make this work with a Ghost Boot Disk, it would be greatly appreciated.

We haven't had any problems with the stuck Windows deployment, we need our custom WIM to work at the minimum but we'd really like our custom wim + MDT task sequence. We will be forced to manually set our current elite 900's...the bleeding edge friends.

I have the same problem and am looking to get a bootable copy of Acronis 11.5 to boot but it does not show up in F9 boot menu.
I am almost certain that none of the USB devices are functional preboot in the dock.

In order for MDT to properly image the ElitePad 900 with drivers, etc, you have to create an appropriate Task Sequence that includes a profile for the ElitePad. This profile will have the drivers imported into MDT as well as the Drivers and Firmware update (inlcuded in the driver cab softpaq but installed separately (see readme text file in the sub-folder or download separately)
Include the drivers in the profile and add a program install step to include the Drivers and Firmware update
HP released a quick document describing the basic steps for imaging the ElitePad in http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/CoreRedirect.jsp?redirectReason=DocIndexPDF&prodSer...

I apologize for the link to the document white paper. i do not know why the link is incorrect. In any case, you can obtain the document by proceeding to the driver downloads page for the HP ElitePad 900. Once there, click on the 'Manuals' link (left side of the page). You will see it listed near the end of the page
