I have a new HP Envy TouchSmart 17 Notebook PC 17-j103ea running Windows 8.1 and just added an HP Pavillion 22xi screen as my old BenQ E2220HD looked washed out. While the new HP screen is a bit better and I can get brightness and contrast correct, it needs a condiderable increase in colour saturation - which was the main problem on the BenQ. I have tried connecting both with HDMI-HDMI and HDMI-DVI. The latter is slightly better.
I need good colour as I am a semi-professional photographer.
I bought an HP monitor to go with the HP laptop as I expected them to be fully compatible on standard configuration.
The photo shows the significant difference in saturation.
How do I make this usable? Is the new laptop faulty or is it a design fault? Do I need to return both devices as unfit for purpose and replace with a different brand?

If it is available:
Right click on your main screen of the notebook > if available select "Intel Graphics Properties" >
Display > Under Select Display >> your second display > Click on Color > Advanced
See if you can adjust the color to your satisfaction.
I have been able to get very good results from a relatively inexpensive ViewSonic 27" connected via HDMI to a very nice HP ENVY TouchSmart 17t-j100 Quad Edition CTO notebook.

It is a nice way to say “Thank You" for the help.

Giromondo,
Welcome to the HP Forum.
If you have not done so, you might check and install the driver on this page:
HP 22xi IPS LED Backlit Monitor Driver
Although the main driver page is from support for Windows 8, the driver indicates it supplies support for Windows 8.1.

You might take a look at this page from your monitor's Troubleshooting pages:
HP Pavilion 22xi - Display Quality Issues
You might start at the section titled "Screen is discolored".

This PC is running Windows 8.1 therefore it automatically installed the latest driver (v2.0.0.2).
I had tried using the Colour Management Tool built into Windows, your HP My Display tool and NVidia tools (both provided my HP) none of which are effective. Eventually I used the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel which I hadn't tried as I expected your tools to be the most appropriate whereas they were worse than useless. Even though I clearly had the external monitor selected, 'Reset' screwed up the settings for the internal monitor with no option to revert even though most of these tools insist on a confirmation before accepting the users instructions. Why do you provide these things when they obviously don't work? Your documentation should just tell users to use the Intel Graphics tools.
The Intel tool is much better but still does not get things right.
I have used the Factory Reset option on the monitor but, as originally stated, this lacks colour saturation (i.e. the picture is too gray). By the way, there is no 'Auto' or 'Autoselect' button on the HP 22xi, the page should just refer to the 'Menu' button.
Why don't you at least provide configuration profiles to match your monitors to your own laptops? And why aren't there Hue and Saturation options on the Menu?

giromondo,
Thank you for your comments.
It may be time for you to contact the HP Support Center. This forum is not a direct conduit to HP Tech Support; HP provides adminstrative and moderation support to those who volunteer their own time to help others.

How To Troubleshoot Color Issues
I cannot judge the quality of your monitor nor the configuration in which it used; I am not qualified to do so. Consider that not all monitors are equal -- because you are a professional, you might be best served by tools that meet the higher standards of your field, for example: a super HD monitor providing DisplayPort connection port(s).
I am sorry that I was unable to help you.

I'm semi-professional, not professional. i aim to provide a professional quality service free of charge to a number of local charities and other voluntary organisations so cannot afford several hundred ponds for a top quality monitor. I had expected the new HP screen to offer at least the same quality that I had from the cheaper BenQ screen which I had used on a D-Sub connection with my old laptop.
All I was after was advice on the correct tool to use to calibrate it, or to be informed that this was not possible so that I would then seek a refund.
As this is entitled 'HP Support Forum' I thought, quite reasonably, that this was actually connected to HP's support service. If it isn't, there must be a very clear statement to that effect at the top of every page.
Thank you for your efforts.
