Hi, I updated my laptop from windows 8 (when sound worked fine) to windows 8.1 where it doesn't.
If I go to the control panel and unistall the realtek drivers, then re-install them the sound works, that is until I switch off (yes I know - don't switch off then 🙂 ).
When the computer restarts there is no audio....again. the only way I have found toget it working is the uninstall - re-install of the drivers. It's driving me mad.
Any ideas anyone??
David

Hi David,
Try the following.
Open windows Control Panel, open Windows Update, select 'View update history' in the left hand pane and then select 'Installed updates' link in the following window.
Locate update KB2962407, right click it and select Uninstall. When done, restart the notebook, open windows Control Panel, open Windows Update and select 'Check for updates'. You'll see the update you just uninstalled being offered again - right click and select 'Hide Update'.
When windows has reloaded, you may or may not need to use recovery manager to reinstall your original Audio Driver as detailed in the document on the link below.

Hi David,
You're welcome
Try the following.
Download the Realtek Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
http://h30642.www3.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp58501-59000/sp58878.exe
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers. Right click the Realtek device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, shutdown the notebook - do this by holding down the left Shift key as you click on Shutdown to temporarily prevent a hybrid boot.
Then unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery. Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds. Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter.
Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu. Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.
Let Windows fully load - it will automatically load an audio driver, but just let this complete. Then open your Downloads folder, right click on the Realtek Audio installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation. When this has completed, restart the notebook again.
If the above fails to correct the issue, right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback devices. Right click 'Speakers/HP' ( or Speakers and Headphones ) and select Properties. Select the Advanced tab and remove the tick against 'Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device', then click Apply and Ok to save this change.
Restart the notebook.

DP-K

Good morning
that worked until the laptop was powered down overnight, power up in the morning and it's not working again.
I've threatened the thing with a hammer and tried praying to the gods of audio drivers but apparantly its not appeased them.
Bet you love this sort of message don't you 🙂

Hi David,
A hammer induced reorganisation of the notebooks internal components is best left to a professional as it can cause unexpected boot issues
Check the following and let me know.
From the Desktop, hold down the Windows key and press R. Into the Run window, type services.msc and hit enter. Check that the following services are all showing as Status= Started and Start-up Type= Automatic
Audio Service
Multimedia Class Scheduler
Windows Audio
Windows Audio Endpoint Builder
If you need to make a change to any of the above, just right click the service and select Properties, then in the dropdown box next to 'Start-up type', select Automatic and click Apply to save the change. Then click the Start button.
If you did need to make any changes, restart the notebook.

DP-K

Hi David,
In that case, try the following.
Once again, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers. Right click the Realtek device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
Next, open an Elevated Command Prompt, enter the following command and hit enter.
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth ( Note that there is a space before each of the / )
This will take a little while, but when complete, type exit, hit enter and restart the notebook.
When windows has reloaded, download the Realtek HD Audio driver from the following site and save it to your Downloads folder - tick the acceptance box, click Next and download the second file in the list ( Note: the download can take 30 - 45 seconds to actually start ).
When done, open your Downloads folder, right click on the Realtek Audio installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation. When this has completed, right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback Devices. Left click 'Speakers and Headphones' ( or Speakers/HP ) once to highlight it and then click the Set Default button - check if you now have audio and whether it suvives a reboot.
Regards,
DP-K
