Hi, my HP Pavillion DV6-3194CA laptop (XG752UA) starts freezing, lagging and generally being slow even in the simplest of tasks (even having a youtube video, or a few tabs open) it's much worse when doing such things as gaming (becomes unbearably slow at about 15 frames per second on lowest settings (BFBC2 for example)) and video editing (again, very bad lag. Our i3 laptop doesn't even lag). I have done virus scan after virus scan and am clean. Power management is set to highest performance. When ever I start doing anything, the processor picks up, and the fans sounds like a race car. It's depressing really :(.

 

Specs: Core i7 720QM 1.6GHz, 6GB memory, ATI 5650HD

 

This laptop is less than a year old.

 

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,

 

Shut down the notebook.  Tap away at f10 as you start the notebook to enter the bios menu.  Under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run tests on both the Hard Drive and Memory.  Post back with the details of any error messages.

 

If both the above tests pass, try the following.

 

From the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.

 

sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )

 

Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.

 

Next, click the Start Menu, click Computer, left click Local Disc C once to highlight it, right click Local Disc C and select Properties.  Click the Tools tab and then click the button to 'Check the Drive for Errors'.  In the following window make sure both boxes are ticked and then click Start.  Agree to schedule the check at the next system restart and then restart the notebook - this process can take a couple of hours to complete before loading back into Windows.

Thanks so much for the reply, David. I went ahead and did that, and it doesn't seem like any errors appeard. From what I wrote in the original post, does this seems abnormal to have such slow speeds? As advised on another forum, I went ahead and ran CPUID hardware monitor to get core temperatures and this is what I got:http://i.imgur.com/H33hc.jpg This is without doing any donting tasks, just having Chrome open. Hi,

 

They're certainly high for idle temperatures - do your notebooks cooling vents appear to be clear and unblocked?  If in any doubt, it may be worth trying to clean them out with compressed air as described Here.

 

If you do clean the vents, check the core temps again ( at idle ) to see if there is any improvement.

 

I would also strongly suggest running a stress test on your graphics chip - there is a good free application called FurMark which you can use and a quick guide is Here.

Hey, I went ahead and did the furmark test and got an average of 12 FPS. As for clearing out the vents, I'll do the as soon as I am able to get my hands on an air can. For now, I have my laptop raised on a cooling pad with every vent having a clear area with no obstruction what so ever. Thanks.

Having gone thru this with W7 on a I7, I suggest to restore points until it run smoothly, it might have to do with some update.  At getting to the first user boot restore point, if the system still lags, the solution would be a recovery.

 

  I had to recover the system and kept sp1 and WU at bay  to get the system back to norm. And the temperatures snapped are much lower than mine,  I wouldn't mind about that.

your not the only one. i bought me a hp pavilion dv7-4190 us entertainment notebook(i7 processor, 8gb memory, 1 tb hard drive, bd drive) last december and after a few week i wasn't happy at all. i tried to return it but it was to late. like u said slow slow, lagging, and freezing a lot,

 

my cousin also has one and she says it freezes quite a bit and sometimes it takes forever to respond. when that happens, she can't stand it and just shuts it off.

 

i've always bought hp printer and never have a problem so i thought i'd try my first hp notebook but wow, plenty of issues. this will be my first and last hp computer.

 

i don't mean to say hp is bad but just my luck.

Hi,

 

I got the computer to service normally following this steps:

 

reinstall from recovery disk

windows update (10 at a time and test if it lags  to be sure)

hp update  and test if it lags

no sp1

 

 

edit:

 I have reinstalled after an issue with .Net Framework and updated it all including sp1. Now  it works fine and smoothly, even the Wifi and Touch bar are servicing nicely. Nothing was wrong with it.

After two years suffering fom a dusted fan. So fine that I installed Windows server 2008 with hyper-v.

 

The point is that with an overheating computer you just can't finish any task to the point that everything goes the wrong way.
