Hi All
I have a HP G72-262NR notebook, windows7.
I have been getting the message “DNS server not responding”. My download speed is painfully slow and it takes a long time just to go from one page to another. Currently I am in the Chicago Public Library using:
Connection specific DNS: chipublic.org
IPv4 Address: 172.18.206.132
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Ipv4 default gateway: 172.18.206.1
I have read other postings and I still can’t make it work.
I asked the resident library computer person here and he did not know how to correct the problem either.
Please help. Thank you.
Sincerely; ZooL

First of all apologies for breaking 12hr response time.I had to be out of station two days for an emergency.
Thanks for all the details provided.
One important thing I noticed is
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 172.18.206.66(Preferred)
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
This is a class B ipaddress and subnet mask is wrong for that.It should be 255.255.0.0(not 255.255.255.0)
Since you have selected obtain an ipaddress automatically I suspect that this might be an issue with your router or modem.Maybe your ISP is the right person to help you with this problem.
Another alternative is to set you own ipaddress.
- clicked on adapter properties > networking > checked internet protocol version 4 (tcp/IPv4)
- double clicked on Internet Protocol Version 4 (tcp/IPv4) Propertiees
- Select use the following IP address automatically
- give ipaddress IP addess 172.18.206.66 Subnet Mask 255.255.0.0 Default Gateway 172.18.206.1
- Restart and check the status.
Dont be upset if this didnt work.Contact ISP or your network admin and let them know the subnet mask problem. They should be able to help. Or else, don't worry we'll try other steps Do let me know what they told you about the issue. Meanwhile, I will also try to find more similiar issues and solutions.
Keep me updated as this is a learning experience for me as well. Also this time I promise to respond within 12hrs.

Hi Anup Raman
Here are the steps I used to troubleshoot the problem:
- control panel > network and internet > manage wireless networks
- view networks > CPLWifi > right click

- connect automatically, and connect to a more preferred network, and connect even if the network is not broadcasting
- clicked on adapter properties > networking > checked internet protocol version 4 (tcp/IPv4)
- double clicked on Internet Protocol Version 4 (tcp/IPv4) Properties
- dot within circle for Obtain an IP address automatically
- dot within circle for DNS server address automatically
- Wireless Network Connection Status > clicked on Details
- Network Connection Details: this information comes up

Hi Zool,
Under the step 5 that you mentioned, please uncheck all options, except connect automatically when the connection is in range.
Then try these steps in the order.
- Open command prompt window by clicking on Run –> cmd (run with administrator privilege)
- netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt This will reset the ip
- type netsh winsock reset. This command will create a prompt to restart the computer, don’t restart now. This will help reset winsock settings. Although resetting winsock is not related to this error, this might be helpful in fixing other issues which can lead to this error.
- type ipconfig /flushdns This will help in flushing the stored DNS cache.
- Restart the computer and check if the issue is fixed.
Still if the issue is not fixed, try the steps below.
- Click Start -> Run -> Type ncpa.cpl. This will open network connections
- right click local area connection, then click properties
- Select Internet protocol version(TCP/IPv4), then click properties
- Select internet protocol ,select “use the following DNS server address”
- change DNS server address to global DNS value given below
Preferred 208.67.222.222
Alternate 208.67.220.220 - Check if issue is fixed.
Hopefull, this should get it fixed. Please refer to the site http://atechjourney.com/dns-server-not-responding-error-fix.html/
You can also try restoring your computer to a previous date and time when everthing was working fine using the system restore feature. But this should be tried only as a last step. You can get the details here.
Please keep me updated.Allow me a maximum of 12hrs to respond.
Good Luck

I followed your instructions to the letter and still I can not get a fix. Also I used the link you gave. I even did a system restore to a previous date and time when the computer was working fine. And still I can not get a fix. I am at a loss as to what to do next?
Thank you.

Disable Internet Protocol Version 6
Start -> Run -> Type ncpa.cpl -> Right click “Local Area Connection” or your current connection ->Select Properties -> Uncheck “Internet Protocol Version 6“. Restart and check the status.
This step I just added to my website article.
In case if it failed, please send me the complete log once again.
start-> cmd -> ipconfig /all.This will show you all the ipaddress details
Right click on the details->select all-> ctrl+c .Open a notepad and paste the details and send it to me.
Please give me a minimum 12hrs max to respond.Good Luck

Hi AnupRaman
Just wanted to say thank you for all your help.
I did contact the Chicago Public Library Webmaster on several occasions but he never respond to my request for help. Also I did contact the resident computer person here at the branch CPL where I am located but said he had no knowledge of networking.
Currently I am seeking employment over the internet and the only ISP I can use now is at the public library.
Again thank you for all your help.
Sincerely; ZooL:smileyhappy:
