Hi

when i start my laptop

Compaq Presario CQ61-260EJ Notebook PC

this message appears :
Checksum error
Press <F1> to loads coms default
Press <F10> to BIOS setup options

and after press F1 time and date reset to 12/31/2007 11:03 PM so i need to fix this manually!!!

i thought that this is malware virus, but it seems that this an internal  problem on my laptop related to battery or some thing.

knowing that i use the Ac power not the battery as a supply power.

please how can i fix this problem because i am tired from  manually correction of date and time.

The cmos battery is always the cause. Its function is to provide current to the EEPROM BIOS chip so that it will hold the settings.

update:  I must amend this to state that the CMOS battery is almost always the cause. A corrupted ROM file can also cause system clock issues.

Best regards,
erico

The message means that your BIOS ROM file is corrupt.

To fix the problem you will need to update your laptop's BIOS.

Go to your laptop's support page and locate the BIOS SoftPAQ.

Download the BIOS SofPAQ file.

The Service and Maintenance manual for your laptop has a section that details how to update the BIOS successfully.

Follow the instructions exactly as they are written. Failure to follow the instructions can result in a 'Bricked" laptop ( that means useless expensive laptop)

Do not skip any steps and do not turn off power during the BIOS update.

erico

so why update your bios if the battery is the problem? you only have to replace a new cmos battery and set the correct time and date and save.,the problem is not the bios, it's the battery right?

I should not have said "always"". Usually would have been a better choice of word for me to use.

Update your BIOS first because it is reporting the fact that the BIOS ROM file is corrupt. You did state that  the BIOS is giving an error message. The BIOS ROM file contains the tables and coding to perform the basic input and output functions of the system board.

The BIOS ROM file has system clock control within its functions so replacing the corrupt file with a good one should correct the date/time problem.

the CMOS battery might have low voltage. That is quite unusual with a  laptop that is less than 4-5 years old. Replacing the CMOS battery involves complete disassembly so...try the BIOS update first.

Replacing the CMOS battery in a desktop PC is quite simple. That is not the case with either notebooks, netbooks or laptops.

The objective to my methodology is to save you time, cash outlay and problems.

erico
