I have turned off OS security, and activated Legacy OS in BIOS yet this problem is still persistent claiming that my hard drive is the problem when I know that is working OK because I have tested it on my Toshiba machine.
I am now at a loss as to what to do so please do help me.
Occasionally I can get the computer to boot to grub but after that I always get a kernel panic, but I guess that is an issue for another thread or forum...
Please do you help me set up my computer to launch straight into grub when powered on.
Thank you for reading and for any support,
Samuel.
Please note: I have also tried Ubuntu and have the same problem.

So the hard drive on this machine failed and I have since replaced it with a SanDisk SSD. The SSD is working perfectly well but every time I turn on the machine I get a error either 3f0 or 3f1. The computer is telling me that either the hard drive is not found or there is no operating system on it. I have installed Debian yet this error persists.

Hi,
A decent machine you have got. I have installed Debian on my Probook simply after disabling the Secure Boot (never enabled the legacy mode). Never had any issues with boot ever since. However, some EFIs are full of "bugs" and won't let you install anything on your computer except Windows.

Which distribution of Debian did you use? Jessie? I will try disabling Legacy mode like you have said you have done, but I'm not especially hopeful that this will work because the problem is with the Smart check... surely someone from Hewlett-Packard will have the answer. Where are you Hewlett-Packard??
Thank you for your support my friend 🙂
I have done a fresh install of Debian Jessie but it's not on an EFI laptop. The EFI/Windows 10 machine (ProBook) has a new SSD formatted to MBR and installed a fresh Sabayon linux (pure linux, no Windows) with KODI as a default app.

This is what currently happens when I power on my machine
I can't see properly the settings in the BIOS/EFI but it doesn't boot from the live USB. The boot manager was looking for a file to load on a hard drive that shouldn't be even active. Live CD/USB runs from the memory.
My boot options:
Fast Boot
CD/ROM Boot
USB Device BOOT
Upgrade Bay Hard Drive Boot (have a hdd in the optical bay)
Customized Boot
Blanked but selected ADD
Secure boot configuration is blanked
Boot Mode - Legacy
UEFI Boot Blanked
Legacy Boot Order
Notebook Upgrade bay
Notebook Hard Drive (I'd put USB Hard Drive first)
USB Floppy
USB CD-ROM
USB Hard Drive
Ethernet
Dock
eSATA
Device Config
USB Legacy Mode/USB 3.0 enabled
SATA 6.0Gbps
SATA AHCI
With this I can boot from any live USB drive but make sure it has a boot flag (Check in Gparted).
