I upgraded from 8.1 to windows 10 a few days after I purchased it. Everything works well. however, only on battery power when I return to the desktop the screen dims a bit. As soon as I open a window, the screen returns to full brightness (taking about 10 seconds). I just didn't notice if it did this with 8.1
Does anyone know if this is a Win 10 thing or something with the laptop.
Thanks, Bill

I've come to the conclusion that the screen dimming on battery power is built in to the HP laptop.

I am not yet running Windows 10 -- it is possibly connected.
Assuming for the moment that you have all your Drivers installed, that everything is working about as expected, and the setup is similar / same to Windows 8.1, the following may resolve your issue:
Adjust Display Advanced Power Settings

Bill,
Can you verify that you have installed the requisite Windows 10 HP Drivers for your system?
HP Pavilion Notebook - 17-g015dx (ENERGY STAR)
In particular, although you ought to have installed your HP W10 Drivers by now, I am curious about the following drivers / software.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Intel Chipset Installation Utility and Driver:
Version 10.1.1.7 Rev.A - sp71908.exe
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Intel Collaborative Processor Performance Control (CPPC) Driver:
Version 1.0.0.1018 Rev.B - sp72039.exe
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Client Driver:
Version 8.1.10600.147 Rev.A - sp71915.exe
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Intel High-Definition (HD) Graphics Driver:
Version 10.18.15.4240 Rev.A - sp71920.exe
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HP Notebook System BIOS Update (Intel Processors):
Version F.52 Rev.A - sp72877.exe
Caveat: Do not attempt to update your BIOS unless you have the system completely backed up. Always consider that BIOS updates carry with them an inherent risk factor. Reference:

Version 6.0.28.1 Rev.A - sp71811.exe

I have updated all the drivers you listed. No change in screen dimming. As I say, all works well except for the dimming when returning to desktop and then getting brighter after opening a window (only when on battery power).
Thanks, Bill

Bill,
The only other thing I can think of at the moment is that your Intel Graphics is set to other than the Display settings.
- Intel® Graphics – or other specific Graphics adjustment -- may be available.
As a general rule, you can reach your Graphics card adjustments from the Desktop.
Right-Click on clear area of your Desktop > Select Graphics Properties (or similar wording)
Reference:
Adjust Display Advanced Power Settings
I may well be missing something; I will post back when I find something to add.

Thx again. I tried various battery saver settings - no good. Battery saver features was off to begin with. Nothing seems to reflect such an option.
I'll keep poking around and see what I can. I'm guessing it may be a built in feature. I can see the advantage to have the screen dim at the desktop while on battery power, as annoying as it is.

I have dug at this a bit more -- not running Windows 10 yet so the going is slow.
I did find a couple of new items and I have added that information to my Adjust Display document. I don't know if the information will help you; it may be worth checking, at least.
Excerpted
- Windows 10 - Screen BrightnessWindows 10 has several spots where you can check and / or adjust the Screen Brightness.
Windows 10 – Screen brightness too dark
and...
NOTE: Notebook setups vary – In addition to those shown in the example below, your notebook may provide a setting called “Dim the Display”
- Help, Explanation, and Examples: Dim Display Automatically - Turn On or Off in Windows 8
- Be sure to read the document’s first Note that explains the default behavior for Notebooks that do not support the “Dim Display” Feature!
