Hi HP experts,
I have been reading about UEFI and Gpt partition versus Mbr partition, and from what i understand about these subjects - the Gpt partition is to prefer if the laptop supports UEFI, because the laptop boots faster, but is that the only thing thats better about it ?
I found the driver page for my Envy, and found out that under help program/tools, there were a program named HP UEFI-support (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) . Now i am not quite sure if this means that my Envy supports everything about UEFI, because in my BIOS i dont seem to be able to find anything named UEFI ? But if i press F2 during bootup, i do get a menu wiith for example the opportunity to reverse to an older version of BIOS, and 4 or 5 other options to see what my laptop consists of.
I also ran the CMD tool, and ran the diskpart and list disk commands, and the partition is not listed as Gpt, but Mbr, because there aint no * under Gpt column, and i think the only way i could make a clean install for several months ago, was to set the Rufus usb boot tool to Mbr, and then clean install Windows.
If and only if you mean that i can gain anything by going the Gpt and UEFI way, by setting Rufus up to make the usb bootable this way, shouldnt i then just reformat to Gpt with CMD with these commands in the order : Diskpart-list disk-select disk-clean , and then shut down the Envy and run the usb drive ?
Further more i suppose the recovery file i made and saved with Macrium Reflect Free, is useless if they where made under the Mbr partition, and i then reformat to Gpt ?
Sorry for the long text, but thats the only way i could explain correct.
Best regards

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂
I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.
I understand you need information about GPT partitions and the UEFI Bios to install a new image (OS) on your computer,
To provide a more accurate solution, I'll need to know if you are attempting to install a retail version of the OS or if it's the OEM?
That said, OEM's normally come with an encryption and a recovery tool that makes life easier as it formats the drive on its own works as a bootable disk and reinstalls the OS,
While you enjoy a popcorn in the meantime, I recommend you Click here to learn more about the recovery media and about obtaining one for yourself, if you haven't created one on your own computer.
Also, to answer your question: UEFI Booting: Newer computers come with what is known as a UEFI booting interface and your computer is a part of the UEFI program.
This allows for additional features such as secure boot as well as HP UEFI support environment which allows you to test various hardware components without booting into an operating system.
UEFI operating systems use the GUID Partition Table (GPT) disk format which allows for more partitions as well as larger hard drive capacity.
Keep me posted,

Hi,
I have downloaded an iso file from here : https://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft/67-microsoft-windows-and-office-iso-downl...
and want to make a clean install of Windows. So i guess thats what you call a retail version of windows, because im not using the recovery media i created on disks years ago.
Can you tell me what the benefits perhaps will be, going from a good running laptop on Mbr partition, to UEFI Gpt partiton ? I mean besides that it allows for more partitions as well as larger hard drive capacity, i was hoping for a faster bootup amd perhaps other good changes, or did you answer that question ?
Also, if you would give an advise, would you then use this guide to go from Mbr to Gpt : If and only if you mean that i can gain anything by going the Gpt and UEFI way, by setting Rufus up to make the usb bootable this way, shouldnt i then just reformat to Gpt with CMD with these commands in the following order : Diskpart-list disk-select disk-clean , and then shut down the Envy and run the usb drive ?
Further more i suppose the recovery file i made and saved with Macrium Reflect Free, is useless if they where made under the Mbr partition, and i then reformat to Gpt ?
Best regards

Thank you for the update,
I appreciate your time and efforts,
Downloading the OS via ISO file using a 3rd party website is known as "A retail version of windows", you are right.
And as mentioned before HP Doesn't support the installation of a retail version as we recommend that you utilize the OEM "HP Supplied OS" instead for a better and faster installation.
The benefits apart from being easy and faster, the HP Supplied OS A.K.A OEM comes with preinstalled software and drivers allowing you to get started with using the computer once the OS is installed rather than looking for individual drivers that each hardware component requires, certain drivers may not be available at the HP Website and hence you may need to look in their respective manufacturer's site.
That said, If you wish to go forward with the ISO, perhaps, these related HP Forum posts may be of use to you: Click here & here as well.
I'm afraid there's nothing else I can do to help you out as I've already gone beyond HP Support to get you the above links.
