Tonight when I was getting into bed I accidentially dropped the power cord to my laptop on the keyboard. Now the colors are all messed up (I'm getting a lot of pink pixels where they should be white  but not the whole screen) and the loading screen is a bright, vivid green. The screen appears to be a bit pixelated. I've already ran a system restore and restarted, as well as shutting down and rebooting. Any idea what might be wrong?

Thanks for the help! I took it to a repair shop and turned out I had only knocked the LCD wire loose.

Sorry for the double post, but I coulnd't see how to edit.

I'm running Windows 7 on an HP Pavillion dv7. Up until about an hour ago it ran really well. I bought it about 2.5 years ago.

Hi,

It sounds like you have damaged something  (a component) beneath the keyboard. A disassembly,  inspection and repair will be required. If your notebok is still in warrant contact HP. Otherwise use a certified PC/notebook repair service.

The bad news is that It is unlikely that the damage repair costs will be covered by warranty.  Customer  induced damages are not covered by any manufacturer for any product that I am aware of.

erico

I was afraid of that. The laptop is about 2 1/2 years old so its out of warranty now.

What would be a competitive rate for this service? I've never needed my laptop to be repaired before, so I really have no idea what is a fair estimate.

Troubleshoot first before getting an estimate. That way at least you have an idea of what is likely to be wrong.

Connect an external display to the notebook to see if the issue replicates itself to the external display. That way you will know if it just the laptop's display that is damaged or if the issue is more severe.

I live in Europe and have no idea where in the world you are located. get an estimate from a local repair center or notebook shop. If the estimate is more than 50% of the current value of the notebook then it will make more sense to replace it.

erico

Hi hptech01

That is a bit like putting the cart before the horse.

Why don't we wait for the troubleshooting  to see if the issue is the onboard graphics chip first? The  question I asked the original author is in the order of troubleshooting the issue to avoid wasting $$.

Hi,

troubleshooting in my opinion will be a waste of time and time is money.

As the user told something was dropped of the keyboard to be specific as described "accidentially dropped the power cord to my laptop on the keyboard" so i imagine a customer induced damage which is not covered by the warranty.

An easier way to be sure is an hardware issue and avoid long troubleshooting is, when turn on the laptop inside bios setup if colors are still messed lines and spots are visible lcd needs to be replaced and in few minutes it´s possible to provide lcd replacement costs.

Best regards Erico

Hi,

happy for the cheapest solution. Since the beginning i´ve thought it´s and hardware related issue as you could confirm.

But an lcd for this model may cost between 50 to 80usd plus hand working.

Any doubts please don´t hesitate.

Best regards
