Hello,

I have brand new HP EliteBook 840 G1 (H5G29EA) with 180GB SSD.

I am using preinstalled Windows 7 Professional 64bit.

There is drive 😧 HP_RECOVERY which is ~12.6GB size and uses ~11.2GB of space.

I have empty 16GB USB stick and would like to copy recovery disk to USB stick and then delete that 😧 disk to have more free space.

I found this manual how to make a copy to USB stick: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01867124

But I don't have Recovery Manager software.

I have only HP Recovery Disk Creator but it only works with DVD, and I have only USB stick..

So how I can save recovery image to USB stick?

Thanks.

To answer your question, you won't be able to copy and paste the partition to a USB stick. I've been debating whether to remove the recovery partition and create my own images since recovery partitions are factory images (not customizable) which basically means you need to install all software and drivers and updates. It would be easier to use an alternative such as Easeus to create custom partitions with all software installed and activated so you don't need to reinstall everything. If you make a "good" custom image, it would take you about 10 minutes to create and 20-30 minutes to restore and it should all fit on a usb stick (maybe 32GB).

Toffy's suggestions are just creating a windows 7 dvd installer which doesn't even have drivers installed and you will need to grab your Windows Product Key to activate it properly, however the USB link might work after a quick glance.

There is NO WAY to create a recovery manager software because that is installed at the factory. Once it's gone, it's gone.

Hello Toffy,

If we are talking about this software: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&softwareitem=ob-77449-1

So I have tryed to use it. I downloaded utility but when I try to make a recovery image it gives me error message "the source drive does not contain the HP recovery image"

How can I have this recovery image on my 16GB flash drive?

How comes that Business class notebook doesn't have Recovery Manager software installed by default?

thanks for reply, I have used similar programs to clone computer and make image but I don't have 32GB flash drive and I believe it costs same as external dvdrom... So I would like somehow manage get recovery image on my 16GB flash drive.

For your system is a windows 7 recovery not available

Use the last Link for MS Recovery with recdisc.exe

or

or use a tool for Recovery

Toffy's link is for consumer products, that's why it doesn't work. Every hp laptop has a custom recovery software, so it won't work.

Your next bet is to use an emulator to emulate a cd/dvd rom and create virtual recovery disc, but honestly, if you want it to fit on a 16 gb stick, just install Windows fresh and then create your image. you'll need to download the oem DVD and create a usb bootable. Yumi works. Don't forget to grab your window product key and installation keys. A 32 gb week include all software and drivers so you don't need to spend hours installing them the next time you recover and image.

Like a said, impossible to copy the recovery partition.
