EliteBook 8440p max RAM? it doesn't work with 8GB module (8440w does)

Hi, I needed more RAM in my EliteBook 8440p and decided to test it with a 8GB Kingston KVR1333D3S9/8G module. 

The laptop quickly hangs even installed as the only module in the system. 

Oddly, I have just found that the 8440w seems to be compatible with 8GB modules:

while 8440p apparently not, despite being a very similar model (same chipset and maybe even same BIOS):

I have F.12 BIOS (2011), but "Revision history" doesn't show any improvement in that regard. 

Does anyone know if I could have any hope of using 8GB modules in the future?

Hi:

The maximum memory you can install in an 8440p is 2 x 4 GB (8 GB) of PC3-10600.

I must say that it is interesting that both PC's have the same QM57 chipset and only one can run 16 GB of memory.

But that is what the quickspecs state for both.

8 GB for the 8440p and 16 GB for the 8440w.

My opinion would be that there is no chance that will change.

Had I read those quickspecs, I would have been less impatiatent... 😄

Curiously, it seems that 8440w only supports 16GB with Quad CPUs.

I also don't think that this issue will change, sadly, but at least this thread may help someone to avoid my mistake (I had done a search in google and didn't find anything about the 8440p and that KVR module).

Yes, that seems to be the case, which begs the question...what if one installed an i7 QM in the 8440p?

Of course, it would have to have the motherboard with the discrete video as well.

Or, if someone has an 8440p with an i7 QM, has anyone tried a 8 GB memory chip?

Trying to upgrade Elitebook 8440p with 8G (2x4G 10600S modules). It POSTs fine but Windows hangs upon startup. Even in safe mode. Restore 2G modules and all is well again. Any advice?

Windows 7 Pro 64 bit

I tried using only one module with the same problem.

The 2G modules that work are PC8500. Not sure why it would POST and Windows would not like them. Never seen that before.

Hi:

According to the specs you got RAM for the newer notebook models that run the memory at 1600/1300 MHz and use the DDR3L (low voltage) memory.

Your model uses 1.5V memory and can only run the memory at 1066 MHz.  The memory you got cannot downclock to 1066 MHz (at least not according to the specs).

If you live in the United States, I recommend you get this memory, and I am 99.9% sure it will work on your notebook.
