Hi

 

I got one 4GB Memory Module from Kingston which matches the memory specifications for the EliteBook 8540p. But when I install it, the notebook doesn't boot.

What's the Problem?

Hi,

 

The following vendor guarantees its RAM will work:

 

   http://www.crucial.com/eu/upgrade/HP+-+Compaq-memory/EliteBook/EliteBook+8540p+%28Quad+Core+Processo...

 

It uses 1.35V RAM from 1.35 to 1.5 is 10% difference. By the way, have you read the fine print: "NOTE: This chart does not represent all possible memory configurations. Due to the non-industry standard nature of some third-party memory modules, we strongly recommend using only HP branded memory modules to ensure compatibility....."

The problem is: not compatible RAM. What is the model you the Kinston RAM ?

It's a Kingston ValueRAM (4GB, DDR3-1333, SO-DIMM). According to the technical specs this should work.

You have not answer my question, what is the model of Kingston RAM ? For eample KVR16LS11/4 or something. Do you know what is its voltage ?

Old post but gets a gillion google hits... so here is my contrabution, to order (ex intel tech)

The HP docs do not cover well the memory needs,

but that is ok.  (ill use the INTEL docs,  have all sets,  ill pick 820qm processor and the DMM3 page.

there are 2 key pages.

 

1: DDR3  1.5v  is spec. (proof below )

 

2: and the rules of topology. (tricky to the extreme and changes in time as the memory gets better in time)

better 2 ways, bigger, and lower bit loading (capacitance)

 

 

the intel processor  is direct wired to the memory, so the rules are by this fact...

 

the odd thing is the Crucial page shows 1.35v is compatible.  (but works dual volts)

it may be, as some are really DMM3L or PC3L , dual voltage rated,,,, but they don't have a data sheet so.... cant look it up.

ahh but later i found there FAQ...

all things equal ?,there 3 class  types.  1.35,  1.5v and dual memories.

JEDEC spec is 1.5v, so to comply with that the 1.35v makers need to work DUAL.

The lover voltage parts go faster , and burn less power...

and in this case the processor is i7 and has 4 slots.

and the rules for running single channel and dual are unique. RTM

 

 

the best way to learn this is the intel datasheet,  its goes it  to full disclosure, as expected

 

ill now just post , the 2 examples, not the 4 pages covering socket loading, DMM rules.

you can read the intel pdf for either generation 1   i5 chip or in this case i7

this 2nd chart clearly shows just how complex dmm loading are.

the CPU auto detects when user  wants single channal or 2 channel (64bit) by what you inserted.

it scans and looks and uses it correctly,

 

 

i had to buy many sets of memory from my 2 HP elitebooks

to discover what works and not.

 

so here is my recommendation. 

buy PC3L memory , (dual voltate) and end that little  house of horror.

then follow all rules in this datasheet on DMM3 slots.

 

the Curical DMM3 (new not old ones off feebay) are dual voltage , even  though there small page does not say that,but the KB Faq DOES.

Best practice is read the SODIMM data sheet real, to see if  it can do 1.5v, (my guess, is most new SODIMM can)

to handle the vast systems in the field, doing just that.

 

and next is to buy single sided So-dimms,

why,? they are more dense (GB/bit), and lower loading effects.  "raw card B or C types".

i most cases new SODIMM are low loading effects today,  the problems come  up on old DDR3 overload the data lines.

(my image above is of 2010 memeries in intel sheet) things have changed a bit now.
