good day
have a new hp elitebook 840 g1 running with windows 8.1 and i'm pretty happy with it. the only thing which is annoying is, that sometimes the fan doest not get quiet, even if the cpu load is about 3-5 % and cpu speed is on 0.76GHz.
Most of the time it happens when the device is in the docking station. have installed the latest bios from feb 2014. also all the driver are up to date. checked bios settings and "fan always on while on ac power" is disabled.
in my opinion it sounds like a firmware or driver issue...
Any ideas?
thanks for your help
regards

sounds like a driver problem
Uninstall the AMD driver and reboot
Uninstall the old Intel HD Driver and Reboot
Install the new Intel Iris reboot
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=23639&keyword=iris&lang=eng
Check the problem without the AMD driver
It works install the new AMD driver

Hi Toffy
thanks for your reply. I did as you recommended. Uninstalled both driver and rebootet after each uninstall. then i installed the new Intel IRIS driver. But the behaviour does not change... If i have the notebook undocked. it does stop the fan and it runs ok. but as soon as i put it into the docking station, fan does start... even if the laptop is idle fore about 5 minutes... cpu is then on 0.76 Ghz, CPU load is about 1%... fan is always running.
It is anoying... any idea?
thanks

For the Ultraslim Dock youcan try the new Frimware
Unplug all attached dock device and test it
Check your Softpaq Manager for a new UEFI
I Think the BIOS UEFI and Dock combination have the problem and turn up the Fan

had fw 2.13 installed on the slim dock, now update to the 2.15 fw. AMD Driver i had already installed.
it did not change... but i think the problem is related to the Display. I have to double check but i think if i connect the display over VGI Port, the problem does not happen. If i connect it over Display Port, problem occure...
(even if CPU freq. and CPU load do not increase).
i'll do some more testings and let you know

I think you must wait for a new BIOS or Firmware
The new elitebook and Zbook had a problem with the displayport is not a driver problem.
Install for your Display the Monitor inf driver , Test a newer Display (Smart TV)
Use the Displayport the AMD Driver run the fan always higher,
BIOS Advanced, Device Configuration
You can change the BIOS Settings deactivate Intel Smart Connect Technology
Change the Video memory size to 512 MB
Hybrid Graphics Enhanced Display Feature
Submit a case for the Problem

thanks. i think i'll open a case for this behaviour.
changed the video settings in the bios from default (think 32mb) up to 512mb. but i havent found explenation what this memory settings does... is it shared memory for the intel hd graphics or what do i change with that.
what has intel smart technolgie to do with the fan problem?
What i dont understand, why are most of the notebooks more or less noisy (fan) compared to the probook from another vendor.. they are nearly noise free.... is there no option to manually configure fan / temp for the notebooks?

HP have a BIOS restrictions with the Blacklist
Is the Device (Dockbase, Displayport) in the BIOS not correct delimit and implemented, had the OS and the drivers problems.
For fan Control Test the Speedfan tool.

thanks for your answer
installed speedfan. but during start and initalization (scanning the system hardware) i get a bluescreen. IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Seems that Speedfan is not having a problem with the hardware. or maybe it is not fully compatible with windows 8.1. have seen that only Win 8 is on the support list, not 8.1
anyway i think i open a case
