When I turned my computer on, it brought me to a page that said "Automatic Repair" and below it it reads "Your PC did not start correctly. I've tried the options: "Reset this PC" (both keeping files and removing everything), "System Restore" (tells me "You must enable system protection on this drive" and won't let me), "Go back to the previous version" and "Startup Repair." All of it comes back saying there was a problem.

 

"Command Prompt" did not do anything either. I have watched a video on how to use this setting, but I can't enter any prompts in this section. 

 

As for noticeable differences, I didn't notice anything new, no new sounds, no shaking, no different startup sounds, no new lights. All my noticeable lights are still lit too.  My laptop is not dirty or overheating as I had used it just fine an hour before this error appeared.

Unfortunately, this message nearly always means that a recent Windows Update failed and Microsoft then tried to recover from that, but that failed, so it's trying over and over again -- and will never succeed because Windows Update got corrupted in the process.

These problems were reported with KB4532693 back in February of 2020, and more recently, with KB4556799. Unfortunately, this is NOT a new issue with Win10 Windows Updates.

First thing you need to do is see if you can restart in Safe mode -- by doing these steps: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2304-boot-into-safe-mode-windows-10-a.html

If you don't know how to start using Advanced Startup Options, then read this: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-boot-advanced-startup-options-windows-10-a.html

Then, follow these steps to reset Windows Update: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/24742-reset-windows-update-windows-10-a.html

If these work, when you finally reboot, you should then be able to login to a working Windows desktop.

Unfortunately, none of these solutions seemed to work. Whenever I restart my laptop, it opens on an Administrator login page. The next page that appears is black with some code on it that says 'The system cannot find the drive specified' multiple times, and a white pop up screen that says "Restoration incomplete: The restoration did not complete."

 

It then gives me three options: "Save log", "Details" and "Retry". 

 

"Retry" just keeps the loop going.


"Save log" asks to insert a removable disc drive.

 

"Details" has a huge code page and what appears to be a log that repeatedly says "There might be unexpected reboot during [Windows setup]. The process will cause CTO panic because the image might not be normal now..."

 

Should I just call HP and say that their update caused my PC to crash, and I can't fix it? Will they be able to fix it?
