We have the very same Issue. Our department uses the 850s with the ultraslim station that in turn connects 2 23" screens via displayport. Everything works nicely in win but some of us work in linux and for us this is a very different story.
We would very much like an update on this matter.

Same here....
My users have HP EliteBook with UltraSlim Dock on Ubuntu 14.04 but it's useless 😞 ...
Please merge the dock drivers with the linux distribs...
[EDIT] .. In fact it works!! On Ubuntu 14.04 you should configure the Harware Power like this:
When the lid is closed : 'Do nothing' (When plugged AND on battery power)
In the Screen Display Setup, you shoud detect both display when the laptop is docked (and if there is a monitor plugged in the dock). To be able to have a desktop enlarge on the 2 displays, you have to put the 'Sticky edges' Off

Ok some early and easy "work around (WA)" that can perhaps brighten your day.
WA 1.
* Connect your screens to dock using displayport. You should now have mirrored images on both displays.
* Change screen resolution to (in my case) 3840*1080 and (insert magic here) and you now have one workspace on two screens. This is in my case not a viable solution.
WA 2. (read about this somewhere (can not remember were))
* Disconnect the Laptop from dock and ensure your screenconfigs just call for your laptopscreen DPe.
* Disconnect all displayport cables connected to dock.
* Connect one of your external screen with vga port to dock.
* Reinsert laptop to dock and now you should be able to get an image on vga screen.
* Disable laptop screen in config (only vga screen running).
* Then connect the other external screen with display port and now your laptop should pic that up and be able to show u different workspaces on both screens.
I saw this page, which seems promising: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTczNzM
i can not test this due to requirements enforced in our environment
