I have an hp pavilion dv5 1235 dx. When I push the power button to turn it on, it goes to the black hp invent screen and freezes there. Pressing any keys does nothing. Please help!

You have a corrupted bios, it will need a service. Contact HP if its under warranty, otherwise try a local repair specialist.

please follow the below mentioned steps..
1. Hard reset. turn on the computer and check for any error message.
if there is no error message,...
2. check the computer if it works fine in safe mode with networking, Try LKGC (last know good configuration), or safe mode to check if the system reboots.

Sorry to hear about the problem you are having, but thanks for posting! I want to help you out.
First thing I would like to try is seeing if we can get into your system's BIOS. To do so simply shut down the system completely. Then press the power button and immediately start tapping the F10 key at the top of your keyboard. If you are able to get there, use your arrow keys to move to the Diagnostics tab and select Primary Hard Disk Self Test. Run this test, and if this fails, your Hard Drive needs to be replaced.
If the BIOS will not pull up from using the F10 method, you likely have a hardware issue, such as a motherboard failure.
We can still help you though, contact us for assistance!

Thank you for the suggestions. However, there is no opportunity for an error message or to go to safe mode. As soon as the computer powers on, the black hp invent screen immediately comes up and that is where it freezes. From there, nothing works. If I press F10, then at the bottom of the screen, it says "F10...BIOS system reboot" but nothing else ever happens.

With a frozen HP Invent screen, none of the function keys or anything else on the whole computer does not work. The screen is frozen there and even my power button doesn't work. When I plug in the power cord the Invent screen immediately comes up like a security guard protecting the computer.
