I had the same thing happen with my laptop not too long ago. I finally ran across another posting about this problem on the forums here where the user said he had his laptop on the couch with him and he noticed the cooling fan started running faster like it was getting hotter. He said he then restarted his laptop manually again and it then booted up. So every time I shut mine off when I get home I have to set it up and let it sit and run until the cooling fan runs at the faster speed for about 5 to 10 minutes then I power cycle it and it boots up just fine. Kind of a real pain but it has been working so far for the last 2 months.

Make sure you clean out the fans regularly (couple months or so, sooner if you have pets or dirt). It makes a big difference even though you don't see much dust coming out. I use a big air compressor and blow gun, and I haven't broken anything inside yet. At least try one of those cans of compressed gas.

If you have no output at all, the screen never blinks...yeah it might be a wire, which is cheapest to fix. But they are pretty robust. If you suspect any physical damage, check it out. But if you get some video output modes, it's definitely the video "card" on the motherboard.
Plug a monitor into the auxiliary video out on the left side and see if you get any output. You can switch that to the main output so you get menus so you can work. The F4 button switches some video modes too.
Mine usually boots up into a working display although I never see the boot screen. Only the 1366x768 resolution works. I boot Linux Mint but if I need to run another installed OS I have to connect a monitor so I can see which OS I'm booting.
If I leave it running it's OK but if it goes into hibernate while hot, it takes some flipping of the lid to get the video working again. turning the screen intensity to minimum helps. If I has the schematic of this thing I could probably fix it; it seems like a hardware problem with the video chip ciruitry, possible power related. I also blow out the dust with compressed air once a month or so.
So, it's probably 3 years old? Tough call. You can get a new Chromebook for $200 which will be lighter and have longer battery life. You can use the G62 plugged into an external monitor as a desktop. Just when you shop for a new machine, there are two brands to stay away from: Packard and Hewlett.

If the video out doesn't work, something is wrong on the motherboard.
ascendtech seems to be a decent vendor at a good price. If you can put it in yourself, it might be a good deal. If you break it or something else is broken, not so good. Maybe you can get it fixed for less than $200, but no guarantee on how long it would last past whatever the guy guarantees (90 days??).
You can get a working used one for less than $200 and have a spare. I'm not sure which I would go for. I don't game so when this one dies I'll probably get a Chromebook and put a decent Linux distro on it. I'm running LinuxMint on my G62 right now.
If you haven't already, download the service manual:. http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02641795.pdf
It tells how to totally gut the machine, and where all the screws go etc. It doesn't have a schematic or too much diagnostics, but it helps.
